A few good results in other pools today with Toulon and Montpellier both losing. Both look certs for second in their pools so both results increase the possibility that 5 points against Zebre and a decent effort in Toulouse would be enough.

Yesterday tackling stats partly confirm what we know

TOH  Healy and Aki are quite weak tacklers, has to be improved

Parata (same for Robb/Ronaldson) + Dillane + McCartney+ the whole back-row, are our most reliable and involved tacklers

I wouldn't call Bundee a "weak tackler", he absolutely ****ing nails people in contact. He does have a propensity for missing tackles due to the way he comes flying out of the line to get early pressure on and get a big hit though. Thought Healy had some good defensive contributions too and overall defense was quite good.

Both are agressive in defence indeed, but the result is systematically costly, they are under 80% success rate at any game
The question is : Is the risk is worth to be taken, in order to "smach" a few guys and threaten the attacking line. Not sure, opinions can diverge about it..

I'm of the opinion that most teams can carry one player with a poorer tackle % that goes for big hits which can make the ruck a better contest and set up turnovers

    And interceptions.

One player maybe, but two? (with Healy)
Anyway TOH is a FB, and he should definitely not be allowed to miss like he did, leading to BOTH Wasps' tries

I don't think that sort of thing should be judged on one game or even a few games.

To contrast I looked at the pro12 semi final & final last season. Over those two games Aki made 24 missed 1 Healy made 8 missed 1 O'Halloran made 4 missed 2. The nature of full back means in every team the full back will miss more tackles than anyone else.

I haven't looked at recent stats but if there is an issue it may be a system issue rather than individual issue.

I'd be more severe about TOH. missing 1 tackles out of 3 is not acceptable. It has lead to both tries yesterday. Tiernan tends to isolated himself when running the ball and to lose his feet too easily. I'm saying it for him too, because if he corrects those 2 things, I'm convinced he could be the starting FB for RWC 2019

In the run up to the first try Dillane and Muldoon got in each other ways a bit and failed to hold their openside, I would be more critical of that than TOH failing to chop down the giant Nathan Hughes when he's covering across.

2nd try Conn lose their own scrum and their winger gets by Niyi in the corner.

As for him getting isolated from what I have heard Lam say, he believes others need to get there in support rather than players need to slow down their run.

I agree his tackling can improve but full back is a very difficult position to defend, precisely because of incidents like the run up to the first try yesterday when TOH is covering across trying to tackle a huge no 8 from the side. It would be interesting to compare his stats over a season to Rob Kearney, doubt they would be much different.

No, sorry should have been more precise : TOH slipped and failed dramatically on the action just before the scrum, on the Wasps breakthrough. Has led to the try IMO, but inderectly.

Apparently Jack wasn't only working with Eric Elwood this week. He was also working with Ireland skills and kicking coach Richie Murphy. Source

I don't know how often this happens but I think it's a great idea to have the Irish skills and kicking coach working with the provinces from time to time to help players out with certain areas.

I'd say that's part of Nuciforas remit. Getting as many players in a position to play for Ireland.

I'm not saying Carty will ever get an Irish cap but with Connacht's kicker nailing shots the players around him in the extended Irish squad will have more opportunity to play higher quality games. Connacht will make more knock out matches by qualifying out of their euro group and should be pushing top 6 in the pro 12 on a constant basis and playing higher quality European teams year in year out.

Reading that you have to respect him for the amount of work he's obviously putting in to working on his weaknesses.

Nice to see that kind of insight into the process.

I've just realised that the Munster's refixed European match against Racing is fixed for January 7th. I wonder will that influence their selection for New Year's Eve?

Hopefully this week should see the injury list easing a little as well. The only casualty I could see on Saturday from my couch was Carey who limped off quite badly. Anyone in the SG have any insight into that?

Life or death question lads: Is there any pub in Berlin that would definitely show the Munster match? Don't mind paying in to see it.

The Oscar Wilde on Friedrichstrasse isn't a bad spot and I think they've been mentioned elsewhere here as being rugby friendly.

He is only 24 and has a hell of a lot of experience under his belt, Sexton was only just starting to play regular first team Rugby for Leinster at that age.
Carty has always struck me as intelligent and level headed in his post match interviews.
Given how he has responded to the pressure he has been under, particularly in the last few weeks, I wouldn't be putting a limit to his career potential just yet. Wait and see how the rest of this season goes. saturday could be the start of something special.

Does it mean out for Toulouse, or could be back in a month?

Ah yeah I know he's young but I'd say he's 5th in line currently sexton Jackson carberry keatley then Jack. So that's why I said I'd doubt he'd make the Irish team.

He's a great ball in hand 10 I'd like him to play a bit closer to the gainline. But that's a personal thing if his kicking gets sorted it's great for Connacht then after that who knows.

Who knows - could be precautionary. I think TOH was in a boot after Toulouse game _- didn't he just miss one game. Wednesday will tell all.

    Great news on McCartney.

Would be standard enough until he gets a scan and sees a specialist. Probably won't find out until later in the week about the results.
