    Is that map of red x's not an urban (rural) myth?

    I've heard the Gardai in my local village found the same thing, and I've also heard a farmer make that claim on Marian Finucane's weekend show.

    I mean, it is true that dogs deter burglars, but poison and shotguns 'deter' dogs. I'm skeptical about the map.

    Probably; I've never spoken to anyone who's actually seen it. That, along with the chalk marks on gates, etc. You could have a deal of fun winding up a village by chalking random marks on gateposts, etc. :)

    i might head out the Clontarf Road and make a few chalk scratches on a house out there (and no, not the Palmarians gaff).

    I think the chalk mark thing comes from old hobo signs in the US back in the Depression era (Joe's favourite era in Wurld history so to speak), where gatepost marking was common to signal to other beggars or casual labourers as to what they could expect.

    I think it's entered urban legend here. As the woman said, most of it is local knowledge being used.
