Golf Mk5/ Audi A3 - issues, best engine?

Hi All. Looking at getting either a Golf Mk 5 or Audi A3 - 2004 or 2005 as a runaround - max budget 3k.

However there are many variations of each out there.

Could you please point out known issues with each please and also suggest best model/ engine please?

What you thinking honestly as more info needed.

Petrol or diesel standard or high performance and so on.

1.4 petrol are sluggish and 1.6 much better.

1.9tdi better engine then 1st gen of new 2.0 diesel but all depends on engine code.

Gti or s3 or gt TDI etc.

I have the Octavia vRS petrol with 160k miles and no issues.
Its the same engine as in golf.

You'll be buying a fairly jaded diesel version of either for 3k imo.

I wouldn't fancy the condition of one of those costing only €3k.

The 2.0tdi is a peach in those cars, and very reliable. Find a good one that has been serviced regularly and you will be grand..
