TBH, I'd love if Anton started up a podcast. Do 2 or 3 short-form interviews with a bit of chat in between, maybe try and retain the services of some of the regular contributors for some recurring slots.

I'd kick him a few € on Patreon for something like that...

I wouldn't listen to daytime radio a massive amount, but I'd generally have todayfm on. to be honest though, its more and more apparent that they dont want me or my demographic (30+ years old) to listen to them before 4.30. I wasnt a fan of Ray Darcys show. Started out listening to it years ago through college, but couldnt stand the last few years. Anytime I listened to the Anton Savage show I enjoyed his interviews and sections, even the chap from Waterford and his local news stuff. There would be times I'd get to wherever I had to be in the morning and I would wait to hear the end of an interview or piece rather than switch off.

But even today, I got in the car, switch on radio "my 2 year old wrecked my house" - playlist on the phone goes on. Get to destination, get back in the car, switch on radio "I'm taking my 5 year old to get her injections" - switches off again, but this time for good? I rarely if ever changed off Today FM, I definitely will from now on.

I caught the interview with the female bus drivers today, was so so bland crap interview but I just kept thinking how much better it would have been with Anto doing it.

Sean Moncrieff had Baz Ashmawy on today and they were talking about vasectomies - had me in the kinks. If you want a quality interviewer, Moncrieff is the way to go.

That mid morning slot allocated to the website looks rather permanent.

I can't remember anything looking polished like that for weeks after darcy left.

I wouldn't read that much into it. You'd have to imagine after D'Arcy walked, contingency plans were put in place in case anything similar happened again.

EDIT: Also, here's the Gift Grub I was on about on Monday. Not that funny IMO, but some very apt lines... http://www.todayfm.com/player/podcasts/The_Ian_Dempsey_Breakfast_Show/The_Ian_Dempsey_Breakfast_Show/64130/0/cp_2/

So they're trying to attract under 25s with the music but under 25s do not want to hear about babies?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88 ✭✭thesaurus2

But Anton doesn't have any babies, not does most of his production team. Maybe that's why it went belly up for them.

I think they're trying to attract the single/stay at home mother. The radio version of This Morning or Loose Women.

Yes I had that on. Great bit of radio, I have been listening to Moncrieff since the start I think he is the best on Irish radio at what he does.

I can guarantee you, the vast majority of under 25s do not listen to live radio.
They Spotify, YouTube, and anything else where they can control the content.

exactly, they listen to music they choose and not a dj who talks all over it.Morning shows are a bit of Easy listening with some serious and some fun elements.D'Arcy got boring with his same old same old and Anton was a breath of fresh air.No offence to Allison but her accent/ always happy everything's rosey in the world attitude is grating on the nerves first thing in the morn for a grouch like me!!

And just to add Neil Delamere and Hector both make me want to put my ears in my pocket!Neither does radio well.

There seems to be a move away from proper presenters who've worked their way up through the smaller stations. Instead, the national radio stations seem to be parachuting in "personalities" who are already somewhat known in other fields. I'm thinking of the likes of Nicky Byrne, Al Porter, the Breakfast Republic team, Neil Delamere, Hector ... God only knows what's in store for us in 2017

A great loss to Irish radio, I was always impressed by the breadth of Anton's ability. It showed he did a lot of preparation for each and every interview, but equally, he never tried to show off what he had learned - he let the interviewee do that. The music was inconsistent though, I never felt he owned that part of the show.

I was delighted when Anton took over but I never really ended up listening to him much and it was 100% down to the music. I'd listen to the first 15 minutes and really enjoy it then it'd be time for the first song and some godless high pitched cacophony of nonsense about being a boomerang or christ knows what would come on, I'd switch to Pat and then not bother moving back.

I'm only 27 like, it's not like I'm wishing they'd play more Showband music or Grateful Dead, but from the little I've heard of Today FM they seem to be going for the musical area of 'the shíte kids wearing tracksuits listen to loudly on their phones down the back of the bus'. And those little shítes don't listen to the radio.

Radio listeners are generally people in offices, people driving and people making their food at home in the kitchen.

The under 25 niche does not fit very well into any of those 3 as not amny would be working traditional 9-5s, they cannot afford car insurance and they have mammy doing their cooking for them.

So, going by that crass and broad generalisation, whoever thinks that getting the youth listenership is a priority is a bloody moron.

Wouldn't entirely agree with this. Today Fm have given comedian Delamere a show, yet they also gave Fergal D'Arcy a regional presenter a show. They gave Duffy a show and promoted MacSweeney from within. Stations giving shows to non radio presenters has been happening for years, just look at Ronan Collins as a prime example, he belonged to the show band scene before working on radio. Tom Dunne, Jim Lockharte were both involved in music before moving into radio, recently Nicky Byrne was really no different. Dermot whelan arguably one of the most successful presenters in recent years was given a gig when he was a jobbing comedian.

Perhaps they think they're the future. Us in-betweeners have nowhere to go. I'm certainly not going to be tuning into Ronan Collins's show.

I'm really missing Anton :-( up to recently my radio listening schedule was
    Newstalk breakfast
    Anton
    Newstalk lunchtime
    Sean Moncrieff from half 1
    Mat Cooper
    Radio off

As it stands at the moment I may as well leave the radio off til 12. I can't abide George Hook so have started listening to Dermot and Dave, til Moncrief comes on, who are surprisingly funny. I'm enjoying them.

I've listened to Alison the last few mornings and she seems like a very nice person but her interviews are insipid and she seems uncomfortable chatting to the regular contributors (the sex slot today was funny..she was so embarrassed!)
She doesn't have the personality for the show I'm afraid.

My husband keeps telling me to just listen to podcasts but I listen to the radio while in the kitchen, in the car, upstairs with the kids. I like to just stick on the radio in the background rather than have to pay close attention to a podcast (like Serial for example).

I don't know where Today fm are going. Like other posters I'm 39 and feel Today fm could have me as a day long listener if they stopped chasing the teenage/20s market who are well served by Spotify/YouTube/Spin 103.8. I want a mix of current affairs, magazine type output and varied music (not wall to wall Rianna etc).

    Sigh, I don't know :( (oh no I'm turning into D'arcy!)

the youth listener is also rubbish for advertisers
they have literally no spending power

Today FM somehow managed to dip its straddle multiple demographics for so long and be successful when you think back to the days of Dempsey, D'arcy, Foley, Fenton, Cooper...that was one hell of a line-up circa 2011 and they will struggle to replicate it.

I think 9-12 would be a good slot for Today FM to try and do the sort of show that Nicky Byrne and Jenny Greene aim (but fail) to do on 2FM...personally I think Ray Foley and Muireann O'Connell doing a light entertainment and music show would be a natural lead out from Dempsey and lead in to Dermot & Dave. I noticed, with Alison, she is playing more music than Anton did...even though most of it is AWFUL...but perhaps for Today FM to be able to attract a slightly younger audience (37 average) to that slot they need a show people won't mind having on in the office or at work, adding a little more music and a little less in depth topics could do that for them. Trying to go too young will fail for them because the 18-25 market are in college or working during those hours so they need to be smart about it.

I thought it was quite cringey today when the first words out of Alisons mouth to Patrick Bergin were "Its very mild out there isnt it" :o

So you know the way that Canadian Alison Curtis is from Canada? How many times does Canada have to mention Canada is from Canada in every show?
