Getting some opflash games going online

    Me: 512 kbps adsl at home.
    1 mbit into an office in which I do some sysadmining... it's got a dell poweredge running debian sitting there doing very little in the evenings. Getting an opflash server running would be relatively trivial.

    you: have opflash and resistance, and would be interested in playing some opflash once a week or so, purely on a fun rather than competitve basis.

    Someone out there must be interested? :)

    Generally, I'm into co-op, though if the numbers were right, team deathmatch could also be good.

    The best co-op missions I've played have all come from [Kyllikki]Blake. You'll find a link to his site in the links thread in this forum. Other missions of note include 1979 (afghani rebels vs. soviets) and all of the co-op missions included with the BAS delta/rangers pack.

    The real problem is making sure everyone has the right addons. If you look in the thread entitled "Anyone play opflash..." I attatched a file which includes a complete list of my addons folder.

    I'm getting 512K from IBB tomorrow :) and would love reinstall ofp and check out the multiplayer, co-op sounds good too.

    Great... glad to see some interest.

    Does anyone know what kind of upstream/downstream bandwidth you need for every connected player in opflash? The line is a 1024/256 one, which probably isn't ideal for more than 7 or 8 people.

    Syxpak, I'd recommend an SMC 7401BRA... only 1 ethernet + 1 usb port, but it's the most reliable "cheapy" adsl router I've encountered.

    Evidently, this is piss of your sysadmin week. I've got a bunch of stuff to do in the office today... which will give me a good chance to get the opflash server up and running.

    I'll post the server details up here and punch an appopropriate hole in the firewall later, if I get it working.

    Right, It's running, and reasonably smoothly too. My ping is in and about 100, though I have to go over a wireless link to get to get to my adsl router.

    It certainly didn't feel any less smooth than playing on a lan, though I suppose the test is to see how well it handles itself when there are 20 AI shooting at you.

    If anyone wants a brief game over the next little while, post a message here.

    I'm sitting at my machine atm.
    512/128 Netsource.

    I haven't yet tried to connect to a server, can't get ASE to download using the installer.

    Could somone please copy the install pack from their temp directory (I assume that's how it does it) or zip the install folder and host it/ email /dcc it to me?

    Though I think tracking down your networking problem properly might be a worthwhile endevour... do you want to send me a traceroute from your desktop to the eye update server? I can compare it with mine, which I know is working.

    The opflash server seems stable enough now. If you connect to office.newisland.ie on the usual port, you should see it. There's only about 6 maps on rotation at the moment. I haven't tried using any missions that require addons.

    had a go of it just now, co-op on my own! First thing I noticed was the patch level, it's at version 1.85, latest is 1.91 with 1.92 in the pipeline.

    Next bit, which I really love, is that my traffic is routed through new york, traceroute below if you don't want to believe me!! I'm on IrishBroadband and they musn't be linked in to eircom, what fun! Ping is around 160 mark, kind of playable, I notice soldiers jumping forwards or backwards every now and then.

    So I guess I will have to ask IBB to get connected to eircom at a more local level! I still have a problem with all on line games I've tried with IBB (only ofp and bf1942) that is the connection goes dead for 30 seconds every half hour or so (seems once per game), because of this I haven't really been going game crazy. Only happens to me it seems, oh well.

    Hopefully a few others will try it out and post up here. Thanks for setting it up,

    Hi, glad you tried it out and that it worked (vaguely). The patch version mentioned implies the minimum client patch required to connect, not the actual version of the server. To the very best of my knowledge the server is 1.91.

    You routing problems seem to be easily rectifiable by IBB. From me to the first gateway mentioned:

    Something odd going there. I'd suspect they need to fiddle their routing tables a bit. You IBB people get stupidly low pings anyway. I'm amazed that a round trip through new york is only 180.

    That would be perfect, only I'm going to Slovenia for 2 weeks on Saturday. I'll leave the server running anyway.

    At the moment, it's running the 6 band of comrades missions and the desert ambush mission, all of which have been fiddled to have squad respawn.

    It's a Resistance server isn't it?
    Connect port 2302 and query port 2303 ?

    I've forwarded 2302 to my IP on the lan, but not 2303.

    I've just connected to it fine... It's up and running. The firewall forwards udp-2302 to the server... that's all and it works without a bother for me.

    Unless you have something fruity going on with your router and assuming you have a nice outbound nat which handles both udp + tcp, it shouldn't be a prob.

    I'm connected to it now, if you anyone wants a game.

    Does 1.75+ still use a query port?

    No idea about query port.

    You don't need to do any port forwarding. Anything you are trying will possibly break things. Basically, Opflash works like DNS - a request-reply UDP based protocol. If your general internet web browsing stuff is working (ie you are resolving names correctly), you should have to do anything.

    I'm trying to get details from ASE on teh server, I think it's the way I added them in.

    Ah, hence you wanted to know about the query port. I'd imagine that is what is wrong. Try connecting from the game itself.

    Next time you try it, aim or msn me (IRLSteffen and higels@hotmail.com respectively) and I'll run a tcpdump on the router.

    Well I'm getting dsl in a few days so when the server is back up I'll be more than happy to play.

    I have all the BAS addons and missions but may I suggest a game for us to organise. It's an addon called MF Capture the Island, I'm not usre if you've heard of it but it's an excellant mod by which you run free and capture towns against an opposing team.

    I've to totally re-install my machine ( big job, 2x 120gigs, 1x 80gig, lots of files to be transferred about, dual-booting 2k with Debian)
    Might be ready by thursday.

    might I suggest we just get some vanilla missions going first, simple team deathmatch stuff for the moment until we get organised and setttled?

    Also, ssh, if you could give some sort of a guide or link to same as to how to admin a dedicated server it'd be appreciated. :)

    All in my noggin. I use a server.cfg which I can stick up here. Most of it has been trial and error. I would recommend staying away from the Linux dedicated server, it's a little cruddy in places.

    Anyway, I'll hang around the server for some co-op from about 1900ish on Thursday, all free to join, numbers probably limited by bandwidth on server end.

    ssh, can you answer my question on this thread about how to set up a dedicated server, because me and my mates have lans and I have an extra machine to host an op flash server. The main reason I want to set one up is because mf cti is a real system hog and my fps drop dramaticly after a while and the ai units build up.

    Well that was a bit of a laugh...

    There isn't nearly enough upload bandwidth on the server for more than 3 or 4 people, which is a pity. The whole thing seemed quite laggy. There were two of us playing off my dsl line, which may have twisted my perception of it a bit though.

    Hopefully we can get another game going in the not too distant future.

    I really enjoyed the map that we finally played on. Mostly because I am familiar with it. (Its the one we played at the last galwaylan in the anno John) I have played that map a fair few times but it is the first time that I've actually finished it. Got myself reaquainted with the choppers(how I love them) even though I didn't do any shooting, found out that you can refuel in midair :) , and generally kicked ass (/me rubs the M21)

    My enjoyment was only slightly hampered by the lag. the only difference was that it took a few more rounds to kill the enemy as they were running, once they lay still, they were history :D

    Sign me up for more lads. One suggestion, could you tell us what maps you are thinking of playing so we can have them downloaded before the game starts. 2 reasons. Firstly it is handy to have a read through of the map and maybe have a run through just to get a feel of things. Secondly, it was a little dull waiting to download the maps, especially since your dsl left me for dust :(

    I don't think you can pre-download missions. If you look in $Opflashdir/MPMissionscache, and there is stuff in there, you should be in luck.

    If not, I'll remove the intros from the missions I think are worth playing. For the moment, at least, I'll leave in DesertAmbush, and probably put in the co-op mission that came with resistance (it's really good, another mission that takes a while to finish).

    I think I'm going to run the server on a windows machine next time. The AI are as thick as **** under the Linux one :(

    Also, if anyone wants one of the missions from the SP game put into Co-op mode, I can probably manage that.

    I wouldn't mind getting in on a game some time soon. My modem /should/ be arriving tomorrow, so I'll finally be able to try out OpFlash multiplayer :D - been looking forward to it for a while.
    I don't have Resistance though, just the Gold Edition. Is it needed for many servers? If it is then I'll have to go look round the shops this weekend, see can I pick it up cheap somewhere.

    Sunday should be good. I'll log onto #opflash.ie to sort it out.

    I'm going to get interleaving removed on that line (either that, or move it to esat business), but I doubt it will happen before Sunday...

    Dawg, yeah, resistance is needed, not many people play plain old opflash anymore.
