You (and others) seem set on believing that I am telling people that they cannot use certain words. I've been very careful not to say such a thing.

I'm all for free speech, even when it comes across as hurtful etc. I'm just asking that people consider the words that they use.

    It's not a huge ask.

Well actually you making a thread about the use of certain words displays another thing. You wish for certain words to be used and not others and these words are selected by you with no other reason given

Kal, you seem to have taken it really personally that I challenged your use of the word 'spastic'. Please don't take it so personally.

If you wish to use such words then fire away, I won't stop you.

I will challenge it when I see it though.

Im not taking this personally, you are, you created this thread as I told you I found it apt to us the word. You then said youre all for free speech while saying you will challenge it  do you not realise you contradict yourself in every second post. At least have some consistency

I don't really care whether you have chosen to take offence, that's your issue and not mine.

So wait, if you get offended by something people should refrain from using it, but if someone gets offended by something you said then thats there issue :pac: do you by any way have a false illusion of grandeur

Isn't that a complete contradiction. You didn't care if I was offended by "words". But insists you being so. is important enough to curtail free speech

Living on the continent. There's a coffee shop on the main street in the city where I live called brownies and downies. Its staffed by down syndrome people. I don't find this offensive but I do find it a tad bit hilarious. I may be a bad person.

I imagine its meant to be funny and the staff are in on the joke rather than being the butt of the joke. Why would that make you a bad person

    It was almost too easy.

I don't think it does. I was poorly trying to be funny. I lied a bit, brownies and downies run by down syndrome people made me tilt my head back and laugh heartily. Only way that it could be funnier is if it was a weed coffee shop.

    And again, missing the point.

Care to show me where I have said I'm offended?

What makes it worse is that it appears to be perfectly allowable on Boards.ie (((without any sort of deterrent)).

I'll put in brackets in case you have a hard time understanding your own words and how exacly they would imply curtailing free speech.

    Take your time.

    I haven't said that I've been offended.

Why does no-one seem to realise that?

I suppose that was poorly worded.

I was surprised that the words I used in my first post are allowable yet the likes of the P-word for travellers is not.

If this was the real issue you had why not just come out with it. Instead of hiding behind some pretentious giving a crap.

I'm asking whether people might choose their words more carefully.

No, and here's why. I'd call my favourite player a spa if he missed an open goal. I'd call a driver a retard if he flew out in front of me without indicating and caused me to jam on. I'd say either of those aloud around anyone. Everyone knows it's not a shot at anyone with learning difficulties. Nobody I know would be offended by those terms in those situations nor would they associate them with disabled folks.

It's entirely another kettle of fish if a bus went by for St.Michaels House or something and someone said look at the retard bus. That's disgusting in my book. To me, and anyone I hang out with, saying retard or spa is describing someone's behaviour/actions when they ought to know better rather than labelling any unfortunate affliction crassly.

You cannot cause offence, offence has to be taken. There's quite a difference.

TBH using any of those words wouldn't trouble me at all and anybody that took offence needs a reality check

The issue is as was stated in my first post. Why do people think its acceptable to use such words.

    No pretention in this house.

Just on this. Anyone who boots a dog around is a knacker in my book. That's the vernacular I'd use, akin to scumbag/dirtbird etc. If I heard someone non chalantly just describing any given Traveller as a knacker, they'd be the type of person I'd generally avoid. So there's a little gauge of my moral compass. Not a bad bloke, just happen to use words a little different to you.

It's acceptable to me because in my parlance, such words don't mean what they originally meant. They've evolved (or devolved, if you'd prefer) to mean something else to me and my ilk. I don't really know of anyone who'd be offended by either term when used in a blunder/oops/dope situation. You said earlier the use of lunatic is fine in certain situations. This is no different, IMO anyway.

If a person with cerebral palsy behaved badly or missed an open goal, would you call them a spa? If not, why not?

Have a quick search, its not what your asking to be used its what youre saying cant be used. Each is a restriction of free speech. And well you think idiot is totes ok even though it also comes from a background similar to the rest. Its selective speech.

Ill rephrase you are being consistent in that you are constantly changing your stance, certain words are ok but other similar words arent, why you say? well because you say so with no other details added

Grasp at those straws Prof! I'm talking about everyday natural situations in my life. I dont generally watch fellas with Cerebral Palsy play football. I'm talking about top level footballers who should bang the goals in for fun. If a fella with CP acted like an out and out c*nt I'd have no bother calling him on it like I would anyone else.

You can show offence being taken by context. Creating a thread = offence

The fact you dont see you are showing offence explains alot. Have you heard of context. Certain things can be said without offence, other things can be said without saying a word etc etc etc

You know that moment where you want to come across worldly and knowledgeable but then get show up to just be another fool trying to be worldly and knowledgeable and not actually being so. Do you feel that has happened here ??
