Actually, speaking of Formula E, if he wasn't contracted to Ferrari then I think JEV would excel in a Merc. Always thought he was vastly under-rated and under-appreciated.

Yes terrible how JEV career went. There was nothing between himself and Ricciardo as team mates.

How about about Buemi? He's top class in Formula E and really didn't as good a chance to shine in Toro Rossa

I love how he turns the steering despite having no wheels

Not to mention the joke of a decision to give Kvyat the Red Bull drive.

I wonder does Vettel rue the chat he had with Helmut Marko in Russia now :pac:

Maldonado and Hamilton had some close racing back in the day, he's probably available. Kvyat would be good in a car that can match the Redbull. Wonder would any of the lead formula E drivers be available for an f1 seat?

Maldonado? You must be joking. Why would merc want a head the ball like him in their car?

Kvyat wasn't fast when he was in a red bull, then he was roundly beaten by Sains.
Kvyat is an interesting case though. His story is told as if he was hard done by, but in reality he's just not every fast. He's very lucky to have a seat for next year.

Buemi or JEV would be great but I still think they'll promote one of their own young drivers

Yes half joking, just trying to think of drivers that would be available, mix things up or be interesting choice to get a chance at seat in strong car.
Maldonado is at least a race winner, has scored a few points, was gp2 champion, Kyvat had podium a race or two before he was demoted, would have something to prove against Redbull, not that they'd release him

Ah speculation is fair enough.

I don't see it with Kvyat though. He had something to prove when he was in the red bull and failed (couple of decent results notwithstanding). He has something to prove in the Toro Rossi and failed. I'd have complete faith in him failing at Mercedes too.

He might be a nice guy abut he's a known entity and yes not very fast.

Maldonado in a Mercedes :pac::pac::pac:

I think now he is on the list of people to avoid rather than hire.

Taki Inoue would do better than Crashtor

How many race winners out of contract and available with 2 years experience in current gen f1 car :D

But yes, would be a slightly odd choice

I guess given how much they were set to pay Rosberg they could buy a driver out his contract at another team if they want somebody with a certain level of experience

Only Jenson Button is available, even at that you can be sure as hell that Alonso has been on the phone to Toto Wolff several times.

Apparently Wehrlein and Bottas are favourites for the seat with Alonso and Vettel next up.

I really do hope Alonso gets it though.

Crashtor for Manor anyone?

His state oil sponsorship money ran out do he's now relying on talent and racing craft...

I doubt even Jenson is totally free from McLaren, given its more a year away as opposed to retirement. All though mightnt take to much to free him up

The massive plus is Button and Hamilton got on very well during 3 years at McLaren. Highly unlikely to happen but imagine him in a dominant merc. :D

We could now see button in the mclaren again next year. If alonso was to get the Merc seat, mclaren would hardly go for 2 rookie drivers.

With the slightly beefier cars next year, it might suit drivers with a higher level of fitness like Jenson.

Also wonder could Whitmarsh make a return to McLaren now that Rons not in the picture anymore. Or will they just promote somebody internally or go looking for somebody else

Lauda: "Half of the grid" has offered to replace Rosberg

Quite significant words from old champion: When I won the first title I immediately thought about how I would win a second. Not the case with Nico.

I'd be shocked if the seat doesn't go to someone who drove a Mercedes-Benz powered car in 2016. Werhlien seems to be the shoe in.

This too shall pass.

Button would be great,he'd frighten Hamilton, have some fun but probably would settle for a few more wins and no more and no anmosity

I'd say he's favourite to get it, won autosport rookie of the year today too

Toto saying he doesn't really want to interfere or disrupt other teams who have already signed their drivers, but has had calls from 80% of the grid

Wehrlein has to get it.
Did i hear he has an attitude, could be fun if hes anyway close to Hamilton and thinks he could take him

I think Wehrlein will be another Jan Magnussen.he won't match Hamilton.

What's Bruno senna at these day's? Nice to see a senna back in a championship contender car😉

Sébastien Buemi should get it. Won the WEC and then formula e twice in a row.

EDIT: Sorry only won Fprmula e once, is leading this championship.

Only thing against Wehrlein is he might make mistakes and is not guaranteed good results. Mercedes mightn't want to risk falling behind Redbull or Ferrari if they have a strong package next year. Could be $20 or $30 million lost plus what ever extra branding & sponsorship they generate as champions
