Austria just elected a pro-EU Green Party candidate over an anti-EU far-right one

    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-38202669

Seems to be a large majority incoming against the far right in Austria.

Lol, don't be so sure. I posted this five months ago.

Nothing has changed, Brussels is still maintaining "there will be no dialogue with right wing politicians". European banks are still ensuring LePen and her crowd of muppets will have to source funding from somewhere they can be criticised for. They're just doubling down :)

Wisconsin recount update day 3 .

    Trump gains 5 votes
    Hillary gains 3 votes.

And yer one can't afford the bond for Pennsylvania either. Must be finding it tough trying to hang with The Don.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,692 ✭✭✭AllGunsBlazing

The recount is farce. Stein knows she was an unwitting accomplice in Trump's victory and this was a desperate (and highly expensive) PR stunt to try and deflect attention away from that. Politically, she's completely ruined.

China has what, around 1.5 billion citizens now? I don't think normal democracy would work there. India is the only other country that comes close and their "democracy" is deeply flawed.

No reason why it couldn't work as a federal system. India has huge problems with lots of things. Its democratic systems are hardly going to function normally with the level of social deprivation, income inequality and rigid class system / caste system. It's really got to work out all the chaos in all the other aspects of its society. The democratic system merely reflects those.

The problem is that you have to develop these systems yourself. You don't just snapshot a European or US system and impose it.

That's not my point though. China's lack of anything like a western democracy isn't anything to do with this. What I'm saying is that in terms of Trump's interactions with China. It doesn't have a populist leadership (democratic or undemocratic) that needs to show itself to be anything in particular. I think China's stance so far has been to call Trump naive and to point out how ridiculous the whole US election was.

If anything, I think China is likely to sit back and take the high moral ground on this and just laugh at Trump for the next few years.

Also, Trump's tendency seems to be away from interventionism so, he may well just back off from any involvement with China's territorial disputes at all.

China's main objective is likely to be to reduce US influence in the Pacific region and grow its own economic influence enormously there and let the US fight about whatever it is they're fighting about internally - guns, god, gay marriage, abortion and so on.

Having an internally divided, navel gazing USA is extremely good for China.

While the US is off reliving the civil war and deciding what to ban next, China will be off positioning itself as an economic heavy weight.
Once the Chinese decide they want human rights, better pay, better housing, better health service, then it won't be.

That's up to the Chinese though. Countries need to stop interfering in the affairs of others.

The US has a one China policy cloaked in constructive ambiguity since 1979. Trump's team claim this was "planned". It wasn't planned. He is a totally unprepared and undisciplined buffoon.

The Chinese know this of course which is the only saving grace.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,340 ✭✭✭✭MadYaker

The chinese have a very different outlook on that sort of stuff compared to europeans or americans though. There is much more of a herd mentality where they put the rights of the group ahead of the rights of the individual, as people they are much less individualistic than we would be. As long as you toe the line in China it's possible to have a good quality of life and thats enough for most.

You don't understand China at all. It is a hive mind culture where nobody wants to be seen to have different opinions, and that's not because of communism, it has always been like that. It would take an awful lot to push them to the point where they would start getting rebellious.

No they just have to have enough money and bargaining power. Rich middle class who don't like how the oligarchs are behaving might start demanding representation just like what happened in Britain.

Maybe there is a reasonable answer to this question, I really don't know, but how is Trump in a position to give/offer millions to anyone, given that it is state money and he is not yet in power?

His VP is governor of the state in question, so can have things take effect immediately.

On the federal side, I suspect a firm handshake was enough. If Trump reneges, so can Carrier.

Trump isn't even President yet and he is already more interesting than Obama and his 8 years. I think it is amazing that the next US President is on Twitter getting on like it is normal. I only wish our politicians would be as interesting.

Lots of the most well-known leaders of countries throughout history are interesting.

Many of which, not for good reasons.

their history would suggest otherwise, China has had many internal conflicts throughput the ages

Trump just made ben Carson the secretary of housing and urban development.

Carson is the guy who thinks the pyramids were actually grain silos.

No doubt he'll have some "interesting" ideas about urban development.

A lot more interesting than the alternative choice would have been. E-Mail would have been the preferred choice of communication there, no doubt :p.

Ben Carson is a creationist. He believes that the world began 6000 years ago. He therefore rejects the theory of evolution. Dunno how he accounts for dinosaurs. Presumably God planted their bones on Earth for a laugh.

The best bit about that was that there was originally talk about his taking on a post and he said that he wouldn't because he has no experience in government and didn't want to risk damaging the government.

I don't think he actually intended to run for president. I assume he wandered into the wrong room at some point and then found himself on TV.

I see Trump is putting the "Ben" into "benign neglect".

And that original spot was in Health, where he does have some actual experience.

He also one likened fair housing initiatives to communism. Interesting times ahead for many of his supporters who depend on fair housing initiatives to provide their families with a roof over their heads.

Health, that was it. I knew it was something a hell of a lot more obvious than housing.

He is a very strange chap. I mean, he's a pioneer and genius in his field. He just seems to be on codeine for everything else though.

It really does seem like in every high position, there's someone been appointed who has a bee in their bonnet about some specific and generally pretty important part of it. Has he appointed an anti-vaxxer to Health yet? The weird thing is, I'm not so entirely sure that it's absolutely intentional. He is just rewarding his followers and it just happens that his followers contain a high proportion of ..well..nuts with individual huge blind spots. I'm sure they were poking for said posts though, which is worrying.

I am just hoping that despite their positions, they are too hedged in by people who don't have the same X nutty notion who can put a rein on them.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-12-05/carrier-raises-prices-after-trump-talks-alter-plant-closure-plan

Ha. Who could have predicted that...
Oh wait, I know. Absolutely ****ing everybody.

    Carrier stays.
Carrier gets tax break to keep jobs n the US.
Carrier raises costs to offset increased wage cost.
    Carrier banks twice.

And in a few years they'll still leave citing low sales (due to those increased prices).

Plus, from what I read this is standard practice by UTC.

edit: Good to see those claims about Pizzagate having the desired effect.

I guess that's what you get if your next National Security Advisor fans the flames of conspiracy theories.

If the owner and his staff didn't post all that weird crap on instagram nothing would have happened at Comet ping pong

    NSFW

    https://i.sli.mg/yH0K23.png - Alefantis's account

    https://i.sli.mg/hPSDPx.png - #murder, really?

https://i.sli.mg/2EmkPz.png - Appropriate for a family pizza joint?

I don't think anything is going on in that joint but I do think they brought it on themselves, there's around 30 posts of the owner and staff posting images which are highly sexually charged, many of them hinting to pedophilia, some of the images have photos and paintings of intercourse with Children which are described as art. Google the archive for yourselves, posting the images here might be ban worthy.

Carrier moves most of the jobs abroad anyway; still gets tax breaks.
Carrier raises costs to offset increased wage cost.
