Mong, mongoloid, spanner, spaz, spastic, window licker, retard.

Why is it, that in this day and age, the above words are seen as acceptable to use as put downs towards others?

What makes it worse is that it appears to be perfectly allowable on Boards.ie without any sort of deterrent.

I thought people had moved on but it appears not.

The words above when used as a put down are rarely meant literally or seriously.

    Chill out.

I see you're point with some of those (although I think context is key) but what's wrong with spanner?

That doesn't make it in any way right and actually sounds like a cop out.

    Spanner?

    Spanner = tool.

    Spanner.

Who said such words were acceptable? Of course they're not.

I have to say I have never heard most of them at all and the few I've heard have not been directed at disabled people.

If you have encountered it on Boards then report the posters concerned.

You left out Spa/Spaz which was (along with retard) probably one of the worst.

But you don't hear them nowadays, do you?

For some reason, the word retard really annoys me more than any of the others.

As for use on boards, stick retard into the search bar and you will see how common it is.

Of all of those words the only one I still hear is retard and even then never towards someone who is actually disabled

    Spud.

    That's another one.

OP it's the same thing as if I called you a bastard, I can't 100% know whether you're parents were married when you were born or not.

Calling you a pussy, I'm not saying you are literally a vagina.

It's just words man. Sticks and stones and all that.

Do you mean these words are used about what would be perceived as non-disabled people? In that case, its just an insult. I have heard it the odd time between close friends, taking the piss out of each other.

But I would doubt you'd ever hear someone calling a wheelchair bound person a spaz, if they do, then they are just arseholes who need a slap.

Would "cretin" or "moron" or "imbecile" annoy you as much? Why not? They're all words once used in medicine to describe different conditions affecting the brain, just like "retard", though retard/retarded has far more meanings beyond mental disability. It seems some words are singled out for ire's sake.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

So then all the words in (post 1) are fair game from Spa/Spaz, Retard, Chink, Mong . . .
they're all ok in your estimation

    Are you serious?

It just feels that sometimes the words are used without any thought about what they actually represent. Just banter.

It's not just on Boards, it just seems to be everywhere and seems to be overlooked.

I'm pretty sure that I've reported posts before but it might have been on other fora, I misremember.

I would have no issue with retard, mong, Mongol, spanner etc. Spastic is not a word I would use and being Chinese is not really a disability as far as I know.

I couldn't imagine in my wildest dreams of using any of those words nowadays for fear of being taken to court. Yeah sure back in the 70s you could say anything to anybody, but surely not nowadays :(

They are for me, wouldn't call anyone with a mental disability, or whatever the PC term is, a retard, I'd call my friends that when they're stupid. Same goes for moron, mong, spa, spaz and a few other terms.

I don't have anyone in my life I'm close enough to to call a n***er or a chink but if I did I'm sure I wouldn't hold back, just words.

I saw the thread title and came in here with every intention to slate handicapped people but it seems you weren't being sincere OP, weren't sincere at all. F*ck sake.

    Made me laugh :pac:

Chink is as offensive to Chinese people as n***er is to coloured people as far as I've been told, doesn't really fit into an argument about insults regarding disabilities.
