Don't know anything about him, there's hardly any calves off him yet. I used ION a lot one year, he bred fair tanks of heifers but they weren't great for milk, have only one cow left off him.
A lot of new Limousin Bulls start of with good figures for daughters milk but after a year or two this figure drops way down. It's hard to find limousin Bulls that improve the milk situation.

As for that Highlander cow of mine, yeah she can be a bit thick alrite and I had to get rid of a lovely HCA cow and a super FZF heifer off her because they were very flighty. Got good money for them so it could have been worse.

Have you used much FZF. Whats the verdict on him?

Put him on most of the cows here one year, he's a super bull, breeds big, long, very square cattle. Have three heifers off him calving in the spring hopefully, the Bulls i sold off him killed out all U grades, good few of them were U+ between 420-450 kgs dead but some at lowish fat scores like 2- or 2=.
Calves can be fairly big at birth so he's a bit harder calved than average.
The red heifer on the left is off FZF and the black cow off HCA, both are daughters off the black HGR cow above. Had to get rid off them for poor docility but the three FZF heifers I've kept are ok that way.
His milk figure isn't great, have you used him?

She looks a good heifer. Have not used him yet but thinking of putting him on 2nd and 3rd calvers this year. Let me know how the 3 heifers fair out regards milk and calving down.
He does not seem to be widely used

Yeah, she was. Sold her when she was two years old 570kgs for €1370, she's dead now, don't know how she killed out.
Don't know if I'd be putting him on second calvers but it depends on the cow i suppose. Yeah, I'll let you know how they go.
I got the straws of Powerful genetics and Sligo Ai had him for a year also.
Can you still get his straws?

I think they are, hopefully they'll have some milk, try and breed replacements here so I have to try what I've got. They won't be calving until they're three and they'll be bigger than their mothers.
I reckon FZF would work better on smaller type cows, I suppose if they calve at 24-30 months old it would stop them getting too big.

Wouldn't say that , our biggest cow calved at 24 months while the smallest at 3 year old

Didn't think it warranted a new thread so I'll just ask here . does anyone ever have cows coming into heat ~5 weeks after calving and then they don't come into heat 6 or maybe 9 weeks after that then

Is mbp suitable for heifers. Do many people use him

    Cows and heifers

Would they be lacking in some vitamins? housed or outside? are they back in calf now or still open?

I'd say definitely not, it would be very risky. I used him on some cows six years ago and he can be tricky enough if he brings a bull calf.
He's a super bull tho and I see his calves did very well at Carrick last weekend.
His heifers/cows are poor for milk.

Had a few do that here to. I think the first heat is a fake and kind of cleaning themselvs they cum around agin a few weeks later. If your getting them Incalf 60 ish days after calving your doing very well.

I know that sure. But they do be absolutely rocking, you'd never see them in as strong a heat. 3 in a row now

Sorry I meant to quote your other post. Do your calves creep into another area to lie down? Started that here last year to try create a separation and it really worked well. They tiped out for a suck and away with them then. The bond wasn't as strong and they came bulling like mad.

Did you serve them to the first heat?

No . we leave them till 8 weeks calved before serviing(advice from ai man).they're always in creep every year

Ya that's the way here to. Hard to say they are under allot of pressure so it probably takes a while for sum of them to kick start the reproduction system agin. You could try a shot of estrogen 3 weeks before you plan breeding.

They would be good sellers. Curaheen Earp or lisnacrann sunnyboy are two very easy calving bulls with good reliability and high meternal indexes. You'll be ate for the heifers and the bulls should make a nice few bob too.

DRU is a good bull to that might bring a little bit more shape and ISL the same. Both from DOVEA genetics and €10 a straw I think. They run at about 6/7 % calving difficulty, I wouldn't be afraid of them atall.

Have you any Sunnyboy calves? I've heard he's €30 a straw now.

No I have a few straws got that I plan to use in spring. He is suppost to be breeding nice stock. Pain in the h*le that he's gone to €30. I'll use more isl he is dropping nice calves. First one of the year is due to him today so hopefully a nice heifer.

How about the Kilbride bulls, Delboy or Comber?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,747 ✭✭✭Mac Taylor

The colour is my biggest concern. I would hope to cross with a ch and then lm.
I rang a lad today who had 5* heifers due December, all sold ranging from 1,800 to 2,300, a bit pricy given the price of weanlings

I'll be shot for saying this but you want easy calving as your first priority followed by shape. APZ would actually be my first choice for that job.

Have to say I can't fault his bull calves

The best simmental bulls available at the moment in my opinion would be
Kilbride farm escalop ( bova )
    Arouch deuter (pg)
    Curraheen dickens. Bova
    Delfur decider. Dovea
    That's assuming they're mature cows
