Fair play to Anton for quitting.

Today FM has gone to the dogs.

I read yesterday that the "benchmark" for Anton was to retain 65% of the D'Arcy numbers. On first reading I though that was a very bleak and nearly defeatist attitude.
    However......
Ray left at 215,000 ('14Q4) and Anton is/was now at 166,000 77% of the last figure, not a kick in the arse away from 65%!

edit: Re-reading the statement he posted, a telling line is 'we disagreed on the choice of certain guests' - where's the producer in all this, who's going in to bat for him or was he on his own - surely (and don't call me Shirley) it wasn't just him vs the 'management'.
If it was print it would be described as 'editorial interference'!

Great, the female Fergal D'Arcy:eek:. Once a day is bad enough but twice a day is laying it on too thick.

I don't know why you're thick with Alison it's not her fault that she has to fill in for anton. If todayfm top brass weren't such gob****es then this situation wouldn't have happened.
As Synode said above, it's a terrible show. It's aimed at one relatively small section of the potential audience, mothers of young children. Every section of the show is either children or cookery. Great if you like that but absolutely mind numbing if you don't.

    And I don't.

Byebye TodayFM, I knew them when they were good:(

I like Alison Curtis - To be honest, she is probably the only one left in the Today FM arsenal that could take over that slot that would result in me continuing to listen.

However, I don't think this is Today FM's plan

It is becoming awfully apparent that the station is proactively pushing for a younger audience. Yes, this could be done well (BBC R1) or extremely poorly (RTE 2FM) but both of these changes resulted in a mass reduction of listenership.

I think this is flawed thinking. Today FM did have a younger audience and now they don't.

What I think that they haven't quite grappled with is the fact that it is the same bloody audience, they've just grown up.

Surely, this proves that Today FM had something rare and wonderful - A loyal audience base.

Now, they've become a big player - they want to recapture a younger market.
A market that most normal people are aware that:
    • That they aren't drawn to national radio anymore.
    • They are far more interested in accessing via online sources or smaller regionally based stations that cater for their needs.

IMHO Today FM has started down a road that will seriously damage their image, that in turn will affect their advertising revinue.

They've seriously fúcked it up this time

Because her show is terrible, worse than terrible, it's absolute garbage. All she does is talk about kids, give out text/phone numbers and fake laugh at everything. I'm not joking when I say it's the worst show on Irish radio. I'd rather listen to Tubridy

Is it really any worse than tuning in first thing in the morning to listen to someone with a disease, depression, financial difficulties or any other sort of misery?

Better than listening to her accent every morning - so much like Januce from friends

For me Today fm represented a happy medium between the Mickey Mouse circus radio that 2fm has become and the absolute bore you to tears dross of Radio 1. Hiring Feargal D'arcy was mistake number one and now Anton leaving is the final nail in the coffin. There is literally nothing to listen to now. Coopers show can be decent at times but even that is heading in the same Mickey Mouse direction.

Cooper has either gone a bit soft/lefty these days in his interviews, he doesn't really grill anyone any more IMHO

The race to get out the "I have resigned" and the countering "No you didn't, we fired you" statements reminds me of Smashie and Nicey's departure from Fab FM

Shame to see Anton go. He's a talented broadcaster and I always enjoyed his show when I tuned in. I hope he lands another regular gig on Radio or Television soon.

Reading his statement again I get the impression he was fired. "I'd loved to have had the chance to tell them goodbye".. Just reads to me like he had every intention of returning next week. He seems to be hugely disappointed to not be returning.

Probably had a meeting after the show that culminated in a "If you don't start doing things our way, you're fired!", "You can't fire me I quit!" showdown.

Alison Curtis is insufferable. Babies, kids, pregnancy - blah blah. She just seems so bland and lacks opinion on everything!

    BRING BACK THE KING FOLEY!

I reckon they'll move Fergal to Anton's spot, Louise back to her old spot and Alison at Louise's new spot

    Louise McSharry wants the gig.

That is radios worse nightmare. I can't imagine anything worse than that. Fergal D'Arcy doing a magazine type show would be a categorical disaster.

While I'm disappointed to see him go, I had stopped listening recently..
Too much self-declared nutritionist/models promoting their books etc..
While there may be no link, it was around the time Ann arrived as producer and that gob****e started in the afternoon..

Now I rarely have Today FM on at all..
Just a bit of Matt while spinning the dial on the way home..

Dermot and Dave's playlist seemed to have a huge drop in quality in the same period, and I can't handle the same ****e songs at the same time every day.

As for D'Arcy, well I'll refrain - Ireland's libel laws are pretty strict.

    Farewell Today FM.
It was good while it lasted.

If they move Darcy to that slot it would be listenship suicide.

Today FM have a big problem on their hands with this being Ireland and the pool of people being so small that they can select someone from to take over. I wonder what happens in these situations where there's a sponsor on board in this case Skoda and the presenter leaves, can they walk away too as the show is no longer what they signed up to?

I wonder which guests he was forced to interview. He was playing a lot more chart music lately as well. Sometimes I have to listen to 2fm, I'd hate to see Today Fm heading in that direction. Anton Savage was leagues ahead of anything else

It's hard to know who they could put into that slot to stop the listenership slide. Ray D'Arcy isn't everyone's cup of tea (he certainly isn't mine!) but there was something about him that was pulling in the numbers. I'd love to know why so many people stopped listening and went elsewhere. Was the program really that much worse than Ray D'Arcy's one? Was the fact that nobody ever got to learn anything about Anton as a person a factor? The unevenness of the program at times and the guests at times? Though in fairness, this was also a problem that afflicted D'Arcy's show? Even here on boards, the Anton Savage show thread was one of the quieter ones here whereas the Ray D'Arcy one from the same slot was always relatively busy.
