Why can't there just be a station that plays music with a bit of chat about interesting topics and not what Kim kardsian had for breakfast or Kanye latest rant.

You weren't getting this from the Anton Savage show though.

Will all the Savage show headphones be joining the boxes of Bobble head Ray's under the stairs.

    Who to listen to next?

Antons show was light-hearted and fun, what mid morning needed. Gonna miss the guy, as will the aeroplane guy......he may close!

I dont buy this crap of appealing to younger listeners. If that's the case why have dempsey and Cooper there.
If they're thinking that the likes of Fergus d'arcy and that breakfast Republic is good radio and what attracts younger people then the future of radio is very bleak.

    Agree with all of that.

The playlist has certainly gone younger and it's gone to ****e. No song should be heard more than twice between 7 and 4.30.

Dermot and Dave had a show last week where they went away from the playlist and it was deadly. In fact I hate the whole "playlist" formula.

The afternoon show is a joke. D'Arcy is playing music for 16 year old girls with the odd decent tune.

That's true, but he did have some interesting stuff on too.

If they're not careful the whole station will go the way of 2fm, no real idea what it is and who its aimed at.

Yeah. I'd say it went exactly along the lines of this:
They believed he should be sacked. And he disagreed.

    A gentleman's disagreement my arse.

Always found something sinister about Anton Savage and it stunk of an Irish culture we don't really want here anymore. Goodbye and good riddance. Our airwaves will be all the better.

Just my opinion, but I don't believe this was a case of Anton being fired. In other situations I can think of where contracts weren't renewed, presenters were gently shifted onto another slot or a sister station until they quietly disappeared from the schedule. It's usually not this sudden.
Anton comes across as sharp and confident enough to have played their game if he wanted to. I'd say it was primarily his choice to go.

Do young people really listen to the radio? I personally dont think sp. and certainly not in enough mumbers to justify shows being geared to this supposed audience.

Ive never heard pf anton savage, but reading comments on his resignation, he sounds like he may have been a better presentet than a lot of them. If so tjen hopefully he wont end up in rte. it seems to be the place for those who are no good but afraid to admit it.

Funny, I heard him say this morning that they've loads of those headphones in stock :D

I think it's a shame. I liked Anton for the most part. Good humoured, knowledgeable and always seemed genuinely interested in his guests and was well researched. I think his slots with David McGowan (the airplane fella) were some of the best segments on radio this year.

Today FM seem to be in a headlong rush to mimic 2FM and get fast away from an audience that now has little on offer to them, i.e. the folk with money to spend.

Between the shakeup at Newstalk, the demise of TX and the changes at Today FM, including this one, I could happily take all of Communicorp's so called creative types and give them a damn good thrashing.

Farewell Anton, the last bastion of witty morning magazine radio for a 39yo.

Very disappointed. Anton was very good. A bright, knowledgeable, articulate and personable guy. Hopefully he's on to bigger and better things.

Disappointed he is gone, nothing really that hour of the morning now to listen to. The scanger fm's have their own market with their playlists for thr younger folk, nobody listens to a show like Antons for playlist style music, they prefer the random madness that he would play.

Not sure who would replace him, as much as Ray Foley can be a bit of a tool at times I would put him at the top of the list of names going around to replace him.

Pam seemed to be missing from the show for the last while. Any connection I wonder?

Good point. It's not inconceivable that management have recognised Today Fms listenership is ageing and leaving the station, and the way to grow audience is to pitch at a younger listener. Savage it could be argued is too cerebral for the direction the station wants to go, and hence the references to disagreement on format, guests and music. If management have in fact fired him, they lost the PR war immediately, by being beaten to the punch by Antons tweet. It's either a very very brave move by today Fm or a daft one, that is of course if he has been fired rather than stepping down.

I imagine his quitting/firing was spur of the moment. But Today FM were always going to lose in a PR battle with the savages and Terry prone

I only wish that RTE had got Anton for the afternoon show, instead of D'Arcy. Anton is fresh, easy going and fun, the complete antithesis of that opinionated, pedantic D'Arcy. Any chance they could bring him in somewhere in RTE?

I'd imagine he has a few contacts in RTE:D

But in fairness, it looks well that he worked in tv3 and today fm rather than get an easy job in RTE unlike other well connected presenters/celebs

Lads Anton was on Today plugging Tuesday's show and how they have Rory Mcilroy coming in and that they had something planned with Ian Dempsey. There's no way this was planned by either the station or him. It was spur of the moment and I doubt it was a spur of the moment sacking, most likely it was Anton saying " feck this"

I always got the impression he was over qualified for the job. Still, he didn't back off and always did the research, read the book, knew the subject etc...

I also get the impression Mat Cooper is not happy and vocal about being not happy with some of the subjects he's had to cover (kardashians for one).

I'm pleased to hear that Today FM have said they have done "a detailed review of the schedule and the station is in the process of refreshing its line-up and focus". I've stated on this thread a few times that I couldn't really take to Anton. But (according to JNLR/MRBI), he kept 89% of D'Arcy's listnership numbers (according to Anton today, the target was 65%) - Although I don't for a second trust the JNLR/MRBI statistics (my sister in law works for the BAI and she described to me one day how they arrive at their numbers, and, well, it's bull****)

Anyway, as for this refreshing of its line up. It needs to be done - Although the bit about changing their focus is a bit worrying. My alarm wakes me up to Ian Dempsey every morning and only yesterday, I was saying I need to change the station and find something else to wake up to coz he's a tired presenter in a tired format and Gift Grub is actually annoying most days and that show really needs a shake-up - but they won't do it because it's way ahead of the competition on those bull**** JNLR/MRBI stats.

I can't see Neil Delamre getting the gig - and I definitely cant see Hecktor getting it (although I think he has improved an awful lot from his early 2FM days). I think they're gonna pull a suprise - But I haven't a clue who. If they're going to copy 2Fm and aim for the younger crowd, they could do anything not limited to chasing former members of Westlife and the like!

Any chance they could move Louise Duffy to the morning slot?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,908 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

I wonder will muireann o Connell get a slot in the new line up if they are serious as she is an extremely talented presenter and she seems to be working in todayfm and 98fm as cover and on tv3 so she's obviously highly tought of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,595 ✭✭✭JoeA3

I wouldn't be surprised if they ditch the 9-12 slot entirely and rejig things. Extend breakfast by an hour and possibly some fluffy double act (ala Nicky Byrne and Jenny on 2fm) from 10 - 12 is a fairly likely direction IMO. That 3 hour slot dates back to the days when they were trying to pitch Ray D'Arcy against G Ryan.

I really can't see them putting Hector or god forbid Neil Delamere in there... or even worse, Alison EJ hashtag twitter babies Curtis.

I wonder would they move Dermot & Dave back to that slot?

Iano till 10 D&D till 1 and the returning Foley from 1-4 (if they change the time format) is for me the only way to keep me as a listener I think. Although out of all the current staff (Duffy Darcey McSweeney Hector Curtis Cawley Delamare Mcloone) the only person currently employed id give a chance to is Muireen although something like Shauna and Nordy Eoghan who've cut there teeth in other slots on Today fm I'd more then likely try out

But would it work for three hours though or like was said is the 9-12 slot an out of date radio time slot in Irish radio ?

If you moved Dermot and Dave to 9-12 then who takes over their time slot ? I think ed smith is very and has a good radio voice.

But let's say you add an hour to the breakfast show. I mean Dempsey that I listen to sounds tired with his 7-9 slot as it is. Adding an hour won't help.

Today fm didn't waste much time getting rid of all traces of Anton on the website.

Thats VERY bad form, if I dont listen to the show live, then def on the podcasts and now I cant do it, shocking

    That's shocking news

Anton was one of the few reasons that I still listened to today fm

I'm sure he'll be snapped up somewhere else

Anyone see Tom Dunne for a return to morning radio at 9am now?

No. I think he's better off tucked away doing his current (mostly) music related show at night time when he can spin discs etc. I thought he was poor on the daytime show he had and he didn't get good ratings.

Today FM's schedule could do with a refresh anyway. Not just presenters but the timeslots.

A move to 2fm in the old Gerry Ryan slot?
He's the only one around who'd lace his boots.
