Make sure to set spotify as your default music player so you don't need to say "on spotify".

That sounds like a lovely idea :)

My Mum in law was in our house letting a tradesman in for us and when I arrived back that afternoon herslef and Alexa were best friends

If he can make sense of a tablet he will be able to use the Echo, you can do the set up for him and it is straightforward enough to get working

Too be honest, if you aren't in a rush to get it for xmas, then I'd wait and get Google Home. It is less trouble and understands what you are asking better.

I have left my legally blind mother at home today with the Google Home and she is happily playing her music away
she was pestering me to set up an iPad for speech but this is much better

I have set it but it still requires me to say on spotify. How do you fix that?

I find it depends on what you are asking for.

If asking for a specific song by a specific artist, it often says "Can't find it in your Music Library" ... though not always.

If asking for a genre, or artist, or album you almost never need to say "on spotify".

e.g. say "...play Dayvan Cowboy", will most likely work... "... play Dayvan Cowboy by Boards of Canada" and you might have to say "on Spotify"

(I'm in work so don't have Alexa here to ask her)

So in the app its definitely set? settings>music & media>Choose default music services(click spotify) Click Done?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,807 ✭✭✭✭Orion

I've done that and when I ask for an artist it keeps telling me to link the iHeart radio app.

iHeart only available on a US account.

Could be a factor. @Orion are you using a .co.uk amazon account or .com ?

Are your location / language settings all using the UK ? (i.e. does Alexa have a British or US accent?)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,807 ✭✭✭✭Orion

I've a feeling it used my US account at set up time. I think that's why I can use IFTTT on it.

any idea how I can changed that to use my UK account?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,807 ✭✭✭✭Orion

interesting - neither my .co.uk or .com accounts are showing the device linked.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,807 ✭✭✭✭Orion

ah I think I know what happened. I downloaded the app from apkmirror - it must have been the US app. Any idea how to get the UK one?

If you get onto amazon online chat they can walk you through this. Several accounts may be involved including prime, music, audible...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,807 ✭✭✭✭Orion

Don't use them - have a 30 day trial of prime which I'll be cancelling anyway. Use spotify for music and don't use audible at all. It's easy to change it - I just need the UK install of Alexa and then reset the device to set it up again. Support will just tell me to get it from the play store - but I can't. Any idea how to get the UK install?

Web app keeps defaulting to amazon.com as well even if I specify .co.uk - in incognito mode it goes to the .co.uk one. I'll try setting it up from there. If I don't have iheartradio as an option I should be good.

Jesus this is annoying. I login to the uk alexa page and then it ports me over to the us one and asks me to login again. where is this online chat you mention?

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/contact-us/general-questions.html?skip=true

select the options then finally select "Chat" button on bottom RHS when it appears

Thanks for that. Sorted now. It turned out my Amazon Marketplace was set to the US site as default. Migrated that over to the UK and set them back up again - they're now UK devices.

Anyone got any speaker recommendations for pairing with the dot? I'm currently using the Anker one I have but thinking something a bit more upmarket.

Did fancy getting a Sonos Play 1 but not being a Bluetooth speaker I don't think it's currently supported(although supposed to be in the future).

BTW, Big Sky works well so thanks to the OP who posted about it.

UE Boom 2 or Megaboom are both good options depending on your budget.

For serious Audio levels check out AudioEngine.

I paired mine to my soundbar (http://www.lg.com/us/home-audio/lg-LAS260B-sound-bar). No subwoofer but still decent deep sound. Got it for €70 when I got my new tv in DID but they don't seem to have it anymore.

Lads I just got this but can't download the app because my account is Irish. Do I just set up a new UK account to do it?

I already followed the steps in the FAQ but it wouldn't allow me to change to the UK store.
