Agreed. It looks appalling on my Polo GT

According to this review, the front wings and bumpers are redesigned:

I do like the new lights, front and rear. Very Audi-esque of course. The pulsating rear indicators and the front indicators use the LED DRL. I've seen similar on new Audis.

Will orders already placed for January delivery be for this facelift model?

Didn't you order an "Allstar" model iirc? That's a special edition of the existing Golf so yours most likely not be the facelift. Details of the facelift were only announced today so it would have been very unlikely to order the facelift model before specs and prices were finalised. You would want to check with your dealer but I'd imagine if you want the facelift model you may have to cancel your current one and reorder at a higher cost to you.

Definitely no, production doesn't start on the facelift model until February with the first deliveries expected in April. When the facelift appears here in Ireland is anyone's guess.

Yeah. I've read in a few places that the facelift doesn't go into production till February. So it'll be April/May at the earliest before you see one here. Probably a bit later again for the performance versions.

It's a bit of a strange launch - a few horsepower figures, but a lack of emissions figures, just notices like this:
Golf GTI - The vehicle has not yet gone on sale. It does not yet have type approval and therefore Directive 1999/94/EC does not apply.
No test drives for the motoring press.
It seems like they are a bit behind schedule but wanted to get something out before Xmas so that potential customers would hold off on a January purchase of some other car.
I'm looking at getting a GTI sooner than later so am itching for a few test drive clips and some pricing information!

The EU directive has to do with the emission figures. Pricing has to be negotiated between VW Ireland and VW Germany not just for the car itself but for each option and option packs, when that is finalized VW Ireland has to present the pricing to Inland Revenue and wait for them to add on the VRT etc, all this is time consuming and I think you will be lucky to get your hands on a 171 reg FL GTi.

Got the dreaded “park pilot not available” this afternoon. Car went in for a service start of October so it should have received the software update to the media unit.

I don't think the two are associated? Afaik, that update is to prevent the head unit from crashing or from freezing on the loading screen.

I get that the odd time. Really think it's from going into reverse before the headunits fully started up. Think the reversing camera causes it tbh.

Yeah maybe I did put it into reverse a little too quick for the head unit to respond to the camera. I’ll give the head unit a little more time to start up next time

I like the interior. Even those standard seats with the alcantara and check pattern look nice. I'm not keen on any of the exterior add ons though especially those wheels and the silly rear spoiler. It probably looks better in the metal, granted. Dealer pics are rarely flattering.

For anyone around the Cork area, I see Volkswagen have a few cars in Mahon Point shopping centre this week, including the rather nice red Clubsport mentioned above ... looks quite tasty in person.

Should I have got an SD card with maps on it when I collected the car?
    I've discover pro in mine.

It will be in the glovebox, most likely in SD slot 1, unless it's different for the Pro? :)

I had a good poke around a new Clubsport yesterday in the dealers. I was somewhat impressed, you see details in the metal that you don't see in photos. It's a nice car, if I was buying tomorrow and choosing between it and the R I'd have some thinking to do. But 49k nice? It's very serious money.

I liked the feel of the steering wheel and the other little red splashes around the cabin look good. This car had the standard seats, nothing special about them. I think they could have made more effort with the dials too, make them a bit more racy and unique.

On the outside, I liked how the exhausts are fatter than the standard GTI. The side skirts and valences are all gloss black, the rear valence is a lot like the R's. The rear spoiler looked better in the metal. Up front I'm not a big fan of the front bumper and having seen how the facelifted car's lights are going to look, I thought the front of the CS looked a bit dated already.

It had the standard wheels and they're terrible imo. The dealer told me a few other dealers spec'd prets, assuming that they were a cheap upgrade like on the R... and got some fright when the cars landed with the 3.5k invoice for the wheels!

Are these the standard wheels you're referring to? If so, I agree, they look awful.

No not them. They aren't too bad imo!

The wheels on the 3 door version above are the diamond cut 19" Brescia's which are 11.5 kg in weight and are a €862 option. The wheels on the 5 door version are the 18" forged lightweight Belvedere's which weigh 7.5 kg, these are the standard wheels. The Pretoria's weigh 9.5 kg and are a €3851 option. I have Seen both R and Clubsport side by side in the local VW dealership and imo the Clubsport looked the more impressive especially the exterior.

The weight of them isn't of any interest to Joe Soap - me included. The prets are the nicest by far but they're off their rockers with the cost. I believe DCC and cup tyres are included, which helps explain it... but it'd be nice to be able to spec the wheels on normal tyres and have DCC a separate option as it is on the R.

Pardon my lack of knowledge but what are cup tyres and DCC, please?

DCC - dynamic chassis control... an 1100-1200 euro standalone option.

Cup tyres - semi-slick tyres designed for the race track. Not much use to you on Irish roads at this time of year

Another reason the prets are so much cheaper on the R is, you're going from standard 19's (Cadiz) rather than going up from 18's on the GTI.

That's some difference in unsprung weight in fairness, but interesting that the standard ones are the lightest, but of a bonus there but they aren't as nice as the Pret's.

Agree, the Prets look the best, might buy a set to replace the standard ones at some stage.

Keep an eye on eBay and on the likes of vwroc.com (UK based R forum). VW will want a kidney and your first born for a set. They retail at around 1k per rim without rubber...

Good advice, thanks. Kunzmann.de do them for €2849 a set without tyres and approx €90 postage. Not sure if spacers are required as I am not to well informed in that dept.

No, you shouldn't need spacers... the hubs should be identical to those on the R so they'll fit straight on. That said, a small spacer would be fine too and they would improve the stance a bit. I've been tempted to fit a set to the R, particularly on the rears, the wheels are very tucked into the arches.
