Long time lurker in this forum hopefully soon to be buyer!

Wondering if any actual buyers would be so kind as to give ball park figures for discounts to rrp based on non trade in buying.

I am going with 5dr manual Gti as my head says I can't quite stretch to an R/CS!

Have spoken to a couple of dealers who are offering 3-4%

Was hoping to get a bit more than that with it being a new buy for a model at the end of its build life, but maybe I am dreaming?

I got 3k discount too buying straight but it didn't matter if I took finance or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

I think the discount you get will vary only with timing really. If they've hit their targets for the month/year already and you're going in expecting a really favourable deal, then you may be left a bit disappointed, however if they're struggling to hit their forecasts then you may hold more cards in the negotiations. As always don't go into one garage and expect to get the best deal you can from them, go to a few and play them off each other to get the best return.

Dealers were only giving me approx 2500k on a new Passat...

Personally I don't subscribe much to the checking the price in 15 different dealers. Even after all that effort and frustration, chances are there won't be much variation between them. They all have similar margins to play with unless your trade in is particularly unusual.

I've bought my last few cars off the same dealer / salesman. Didn't price around at all! But having said that I was pretty sure I was getting a good deal each time. I just find that in the longer run it is very beneficial to have a good rapport with a local dealership who know you and know your car. I've never had any hassles with servicing / warranty claims that I often read about on these forums. If I'm looking for after market parts / accessories I'd get a good price... that sort of thing.

That to me is worth a lot more than saving €200 buying the car down in the arse end of Longford (for example!).

Yeah a dealer qouted 200 euro cheaper than the dealer i have ordered off. But stuck with my local dealer because it's handier to go to for parts/problems etc lol

I'm bit of the opposite to be honest, I'm always willing to travel for the right deal within reason. Obviously I'm not going to travel half way round the country to save €200 but I have saved a good few quid by travelling. The only way to know if I'm getting a good deal is by shopping around and comparing prices otherwise your local dealer thinks you will be buying off him every two or three years so he doesn't have to try very hard to earn your business. As for parts and servicing, I still get mine at my local dealer and never made an ounce of difference that I bought my car from another dealer, I actually have a good relationship with them in that respect and maybe they will try a bit harder next time to sell me a car.

Anyone buying a new VW would be mad not to at least price it will Al Hayes, I've seen 1000's in the difference in deals from him compared to other VW dealers.

Wouldn't have a car off him if I got it for free*.

*slight exaggeration - but he'd be the last dealer in the country I'd set foot in.

I'd be the exact opposite, first port of call. My family (and extend family) are buying cars of him for more than 30 years always good to deal with and often considerably cheaper than other dealers on price.

In general though another family member saved over 1k on a Peugeot by going around to dealers last year so I think its mad not to do the rounds if buying new.

Each to their own. I'd place a very high value on customer service, a reasonably professional approach, convenient location (if things go wrong) and high confidence that if I have any issues, they'd be resolved professionally and timely - i.e. I won't be dicked around. I'd be happy to pay a few quid extra for all that peace of mind - but having said that, I actually don't think I am paying anything extra at all.

In my very few dealings with that particular dealership and from reliable stories I've heard, they'd fall well short in all the above criteria.

Im based in Cork and when I last changed my car there were more VW dealers in the county compared to now and I saved a good deal and dealers which were once there are no longer. just to give an example.

    turners x motors now closed
    blackwater Fermoy
    Newmarket motors
Leonards in Skibb now blackwater Motors
    O learys Lissarda

back then there were 5 now only 2.
I shopped around an turners x motors gave me the best price- alas they are no more with blackwater now on site. A lot of this shopping around involved phonecalls. By consolidating the network VW don't want you to shop around but I intend to do it again.

Trouble with phonecalls (or even worse email - don't even bother) is that many salesmen won't take you seriously and will low-ball you. It's one of those big ticket purchases that really requires a face-to-face negotiation.

Supposed to be one of the cheapest around if buying brand new but the opposite if buying used. Wouldn't buy anything used from them though from the stories I've read and heard.

They are expensive second hand, well for stuff more than a few years old. New or demo and stuff up to around 1 year old they are close to as cheap as you will find and I've yet to hear of them being beaten on a new car.

On the other hand I've heard figures like 3k less cost to change compared to other dealers on new car.

On the other hand I've heard figures like 3k less cost to change compared to other dealers on new car.

    One example...

A colleague sitting next to me here was buying a new Golf last year. He wanted a black one. Local VW dealers that I use quoted him X. He took some time off, went down to see Hayes and (after waiting over an hour to speak to him) he quoted him something like 7-800 less for the "black" Golf... which was parked up down in one of his fields. It was only when I was looking at the 2 quotes with him that we realised Hayes was quoting him for a non-metallic black. When he questioned him on it he was told "Ah shur black is black isn't it?"

TLDR - I'd be highly skeptical of anyone getting "3K less" is getting the same car. Personally I'd be checking if all 4 wheels are attached.

Yep you're right there about phoning, phoned 2 dealers. Moore's in Athlone and Keanes in Roscommon waving my cash but i guess they didn't want it. They never rang back with their price...They should take phone calls a bit more seriously because they had a chance of a deal.

Porblem is, for every one of you, they get 9 other calls of people who got bored and did a bit of browsing on Carzone and feel like seeing what might be on offer, if they were in the market.

Sometimes I feel these days with the amount of window shoppers dealers get even through their doors into the showroom, it can take a bit of concerted effort to actually get them to take you seriously as a potential buyer and not a time waster.

Example of this happened to me last year when I was doing the rounds looking for my next car. Went into Airside Ford to ask about the ST I had seen parked outside there a few times while passing, spoke with the salesman for a few minutes about them and rough cost to change (from my existing! ST), delivery time etc... the ST had been taken by the sales manager that day to go somewhere, so he took my details and was to give me a call when I could come back and test drive it. Never heard from him again. Walked across the road (literally) to McAllisters had a chat, went through some numbers and was contacted the next morning to arrange to come back and test drive. I ended up not buying from either garage, but had Airside Ford's price and offering been on a par or even slightly cheaper than other places, I wouldn't have given them my business after the customer service I got (or didn't) from them.

Yep... that's very frustrating. But on the other side of the coin I know that dealers/salesmen get an incredible amount of low-balling ("what's yer best price?") time wasters. Ever try selling anything yourself on DD or (worse) Adverts? That's what they deal with everyday and I guess with the best will in the world, they let a few genuine buyers slip through.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

Oh I agree Joe, completely. Thing is I make an effort not to discuss solid numbers up front and more display an interest in test driving, or else discussing exactly what I want (as I usually know), so I would like to think that it would take a rather sleepy salesman to miss me as a potential genuine buyer rather than a kick-a-tyre what's your best price type of fella. :)

I did end up selling my old car on DD though and the first caller within about 3 hours of the ad going up came to see the car the next morning and drove away in it, so I may have lucked out slightly there... haha.

I put a car on DD and it was sold within 15 minutes :D

Does it change the co2 rating? I know there was chat about the lower profile tyres and bigger wheels might cause issue with the glass rattling or cracking but I have a vague memory of it impacting the co2 rating and the knock on effect that would have? I might have just pulled that out of my arse though...

It's something to do with the kerb weight of the car - and presumably the risk of the glass cracking. For some reason the 19's on the GTI have a lower profile tyre than those on the R.

Not the same car i know but ordered a bitdi 240 bhp Passat a week ago. How long does it usually take to get a build date? More than a week?

It could take a few weeks. You'll probably have to pester the dealer.
