Saw a piece recently quoting medics - sorry I can't re-find it, but others may have more luck - saying that you take in more pollution sitting in a car than cycling, and that if your cycling speed is relatively low, you don't take in much pollution going through cities.

    Edit: http://www.bicycling.com/training/health-injuries/the-best-new-tool-for-fighting-air-pollution-exposure-on-the-bike-riding

(for some reason it's impossible to copy-and-paste a quote from this publication)

i suspect it's also a lot to do with how good the filters are in your car, at filtering the air from outside. one occasion where A/C may provide an advantage.

    Phil Gaimon on Twitter:
When you post something about Cancellara being Luigi in Operacion Puerto, and you're corrected by literally the best source. @thomasdekker

    Fully story here.

    From that article:
"Fuentes gave me that nickname," Dekker said to Humo. "That's me so, and no one else. I came in contact with Fuentes through my agent, Jacques Hanegraaf. He introduced me to Fuentes and Luigi Cecchini."

I still don't 100% believe Dekker for some reason. Why would Dekker lie? I don't know, maybe to help sell his book, or to cover for another rider?

Also, 'Clasicomano' (number 33) and 'Clasicomano Luigi' (number 24) could still be two different cyclists.

I found the first comment from that story to be pretty amusing :D:
    "I'm Spartacus.
    -No, I'm Spartacus.
    -I'm Spartacus."

that's a cold one this morning. saw five hardy souls out on the old N2 at about 9:30 this morning; the thermometer in the car was claiming -1.5C.

I very gingerly rode to work on the MTB at 6.30am. Met a couple of lads on road bikes at Blake's Cross. Garmin was displaying -3c.

I was out at 9.30 this morning. Garmin showing 7.5degrees. I'm calling bs on that though. I only cycled the few k to the gym so didn't wrap up properly. Lesson learned

From the weather forecast thread for tonight and the morning....
"TONIGHT ... Frost and freezing fog, very cold, widespread icy roads. Lows about -5 to -2 C."

I'll be heading home from work in the next couple of hours. Might be interesting!

I was out in it at about eleven last night. It was quite bracing. Very pretty with all the fog though.

I saw a man the other night at the Kenilworth crossroads riding a bakfiets with a covered front.

    "Tomasrojo?" I shouted.

He waited for the lights, then went straight ahead, staring fixedly before him.

Well, as magicbastarder has pointed out, it could be worse.

(Wasn't me; other end of the scale last night: on the Brompton.)

I think I seen tomasrojo on the Drummartin link road awhile ago. Small courier backpack with reflective strip? I nearly shouted out but then I could not remember was that the bag described and also in case this man just eyeballed me as he walked across the road.

Sounds like me. I go that way an awful lot. Small blue messenger bag with a yellow belt longitudinally encircling it.

I hate this headline. What on earth does the fact he was a cyclist have to do with a sexual assault? This epitomises the whole concept of cyclists being a tribe of "others", but one which it is socially acceptable to single out.

In this case, though, he was a member of a cycling club touring in the area.

A lot of headlines involving a non-famous person needs a snappy epithet, because you can't use their name to describe them. So job, family position, hobby are all up for grabs - 'student', 'mother', 'taxi driver', 'cyclist', 'teacher'... presumably it depends on whether the editor wants the audience to feel sympathy (mother) or anger (politician).

What an absolutely horrible thing to do though. I find it hard to believe there are human beings that could do such things

If the man had been on a GAA club weekend away, the headline would have been "GAA player assaulted woman..."

I don't think it represents any axe grinding against cyclists.

What is it with the generalisations? Lots of people sharpen their own axes, but it doesn't mean they're constantly waging campaigns against particular groups in society.

How do you sharpen your axes Lumen?
