Didn't get any bite on this. Was cleaning the R recently and the Gardai came by and got out to speak to me. Enquired about what security measures I have for it. Were saying they were a primary target and were speaking about recent incidents. They have a whole section dedicated to stolen cars. I asked about the Clifford security as thats what they were recommending to me. Considering it but would be eager to know if any of you are familiar with it?

    Scary...
Well the R already has a factory fitted alarm. I assume the Guards were talking about tracker systems.
They referred to trackers but also a device that will deactivate the engine down the road if indeed they do get their hands on it. Would simply cut out.
Given the risk around it specifically at the moment, I am seriously thinking of getting something. Guy in work recently got up in the morning at there were 4 guys in his kitchen saying give us the keys and nobody will be hurt :ermm:

I'd imagine they are a prime target especially in 5 door form. Serious get away cars. The old MK5s were a favourite of the criminal fraternity too. Speaking from experience too as I sold one a few years back and had detectives at my door less than 24 hours later.

I think these days it's more for the parts. They take them and strip them, sending the parts Eastward where the car itself is worth more broken up and sold in bits than it is as one lump, nearly twice as much is the figure I last heard when I read about it.

Apparently the facelift will be announced on Thursday - see garbled press release here.

It's unclear whether the facelift will cover the GTI/GTD/R or not, but I wouldn't be making any purchasing decisions this side of Thursday.

A lot of the interior and tech changes are known already - just hoping they do something decent with the styling, maybe a little less safe than usual. They left the Leon relatively unscathed but the Octy is woeful.

A 400bhp R was canned some time back as it would be too competitive with the Audi RS3.

Such a hullabaloo over what's very likely going to be a "spot the difference" facelift.

PR marketing alright, VW are very conservative when it comes to the Golf so visually I'd expect very little difference. This is more a nip and tuck, more than likely just slightly redesigned front and rear lights to incorporate new LED technology and slight changes to the interior switch gear to include a new larger infotainment centre console along with the digital binnacle from the Passat/Tiguan.

Totally agree, I think it will be interesting to see if there will be a Golf R version.

Would expect the golf R to have the upgraded engine same as revamped Audi s3 with 310bhp and 7 speed dsg.

Just a quick update I got prices for Continental and Goodyear tires that were recommended. Only a €1 in the difference, but the Goodyear tires came with a £25 voucher for Amazon which sweetened the deal a little (I need a new gps watch so voucher will be used on black Friday).

    Anyway thanks for the advice.

Did you buy from a bricks and mortar shop or online in the end?

Does anyone know if it is possibly to play videos on the media system in the R? Is it possible with an SD card?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,554 ✭✭✭JoeA3

I'm pretty certain video playback of any kind does not work at all on the Discover Media. The Pro will play DVD's, not sure if it plays video files.

A few pics of the purported facelift here. Looks fairly low key. Looks like they are facelifting the fast golfs as well add the regular ones.

You should try the German configurator sometime. All the colours of the rainbow!

Yes that's true but at a cost between €1770 and €2210 for the option of choosing a colour outside of the standard colour palette.

The Discovery Pro will play AVI's but not MKV's. I haven't tried to play from the SD card directly, rather I copy them from a USB key to the internal HD and play from there.

Iv tried the MP4 (apple format) but to no avail, which is strange really given that the unit supports Apple Car play...

I wonder will the bread and butter models get all of those upgrades or will things like LED DRLs and large screen infotainment system be reserved for higher end models?

I presume Irish prices and specs have not been announced yet? Irish VW website hasn't been updated yet but no surprise there really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 douglaslad

Standard GTi goes up to 227bhp with the GTi Performance at 241bhp. No mention of the R from what I can see. Orders for the new models to commence in February.

I'd imagine the touch-screen will be a costly option across most of the range and the LED headlights will simply replace the current xenons. Halogens still on the low end models I imagine.

The Tiguan has the digital dash on highline models, they may go that way on the golf too.

I'd say so Neil. But it wouldn't surprise me if the Highline got it as standard and the GTI/D/R didn't! E.g. the current Highline has leather... it's 2k in a GTI.

The digital dash (speedo, rev counter, etc) is entirely separate to the new gesture control infotainment system though. I can't see that being standard in any trim.

Must say I really like those tweaks. I think the new light shapes are a big improvement and they kind of remind me of the Mk. 6 in some ways, which I preferred over the Mk. 7.

Looks very smart and that colour is great too. Looking forward to seeing a Highline/GTI/GTD in the metal.

I don't think the overall shape of the light units themselves are any different. There's no sheet metal differences at all afaik. The Mk5 -> Mk6 changes were fairly subtle but this facelift is on another planet in terms of subtlety - hence why they aren't calling it a MK8 I guess.

Could have sworn the real clusters were a bit bigger......must be an illusion, and thought the front ones looked different too.....getting a bit blind in my old age, maybe...still I saw this Golf in a different light there and it created just a little spark of lust I hadn't felt for the present model. :)
