    No, according to people's reactions to the current refugee situation, being an engineer makes me some form of higher being that is too important too lose. I will be provided with my own private yacht and set out to sea.

    Each country will then radio in their offer and I will pick my favourite. At the dock both the left and right will be waiting to great me with open arms and red carpet.


    That or I'll be in Donegal or mayo that weekend and everything will be over before I notice.

    It's an interesting question.

    Of course, most non-stupid people realise that Ireland has been de-facto protected by NATO in spite of never having been a member of it. Interesting trick, that. We wanted the benefits, without the quid pro quo as it were.

    Fight with what? Unless you already own a centrefire rifle, it would be a Dads Army scenario with the breadknife tied to a brush handle.
    This is not Switzerland, where almost all males serve in the Army in their teens, and retain their weapons for life.
    Switzerland dosen't have an Army, Switzerland IS an Army.
    Here the Government and Gardai, TD's etc actively strive so that the citizens are not allowed to have sporting firearms which are close to military arms in function or appearance .
    Against any military invader, we would be cut to pieces in minutes.

    What would you be fighting for?
    If some stray on the street came up to me and started on me for no reason, I'd defend myself, I wouldn't back down.
    If some young one started on me over a man, she's welcome to him. I wouldn't fight.
    If someone touched my friends or my brother and they weren't able to fight back, I would.
    If we were invaded the government were overthrown, then no, not unless they were reefing me out of my bed in the middle of the night

    Seriously though - no need for blood and mortar fire here in Ireland. Mass scale civil disobedience and few natural resources are the things that will keep us free. Would-be invaders aren't that irrational.

    I'd sign up to fight, but as soon as I was issued a side arm, I'd go AWOL and just play with the gun all day. You know that spinny thing cowboys do with their pistol, I'd master the sh*t out of that.

    Well it would depend on the intentions of the people invading, but if it was a sort of nazi type invasion i would fight if it was some sort of less cronyistic nation i would probably welcome them on in. If they offered to behead Enda and co well then i would make them a nice cup of tea.

    I haven't read the whole thread but has anyone mentioned that there is a foreign army already occupying part of Ireland? I don't see too many volunteering to fight them. As it is I feel absolutely no loyalty to the state that calls itself Ireland but only comprises 26 of its counties. I wouldn't volunteer to join their army but probably would join some sort of guerrilla flying column outfit for some behind the lines shenanigans and the pike would be well and truly kept in the thatch pending the inevitable revolution.
