The web summit is a bit of a joke imo. Virtually none of the starups that pay to be there get off the ground. It's a harvesting spot for recruiters and little else.

Startups who get off the ground are busy actually working rather than wasting their time with it. We turned down the chance to go a couple of years ago when they were starting to do well and not a single one of the (competent) guys I know who went to it found it engaging or useful. You're right though, great for recruiters and non-technical people.

I toast her parents but not mine?

When you google this you see all sorts of nonsense. A lot of US sites which go on about the best man toasting first. I guess I'll just toast after each section!

No its a speech where you toast

Toasting her parents is essentially mandatory grovelling from you

It's perfectly fine to toast your parents too

I'd cease and desist from those American sites

What's the gap between the ceremony ad the meal BTW?

Awec is from the north so I assume it's a dry wedding, that saves a lot of pressure on the toasting

You can thank whoever you like but if you get too into naming individuals you'll probably offend someone by leaving them out. Thank her parents, your parents, the bridesmaids and your groomsmen, say something sort and sweet about them all, then thank your wife for making you the luckiest man alive, or something to that effect, thank everyone for coming and sharing in your special day and then cheers.

You could also try to find out off your best man what he's planning on doing in his speech, in terms of thanking people. If he thanks everyone for coming and toasts the happy couple you really only have to say the briefest of thanks to the wedding party and anyone who helped in a meaningful way and wrap it up.

I wrote mine during the meal - basically a thanks list. Thank everyone who helped ye along the way - from your parents to hers, friends, the priest, etc. When talking about her parents tell them how they did a fine job and how welcoming they have been to you etc.
Toast the bridesmaids and remark how well they look - not a time for honest opinion! but they usually do anyway ;) . Thank your best man and tell everyone he's a great guy but a compulsive liar. Then talk about your new WIFE - how you met, how gorgeous she looks, and how happy she makes you. Then toast the bride.
Then sit down and get drunk while the best man annihilates your character ;)

I heard a story once, not sure how true it is, about a groom who stood up to make his speech and asked everyone to check under their plates to see if there was a gold star on them, anyone who had a gold star had to stand up. A couple of lads stood up and the groom announced that his wife had slept with all of them since they got engaged and he was having the marriage annulled.

I'm thanking her aunt and her uncle (not the same family) who have done some pretty big things for the wedding. Aunt made the wedding cake, uncle is the photographer. Would you normally toast them? Think it might be a bit odd for them.

You could say you want to thank everyone who made the day possible and then just name drop them at the end of that. Individual recognition without heaping too much attention on them.

Thanks to all for all of their hard work to get this wedding blah blah, but a special thanks to uncle who you might see floating around with a camera, and auntie who is feeding us all with yummy wedding cake.

Aye I know that! But they are the only two I am explicitly naming because they've contributed big time. Just wondering if it'd be odd to toast the two of them, or I can just thank them and then move on to her family for the first thanks plus toast.

As you can tell I've never written a groom's speech before!

No need to toast them, just thank them by name for what they've done for ye.

My sister was at a wedding a few years ago, and the grooms cousin accused the bride of having a fling with the best man. Turns out the best man was in a relationship with the brides twin sister.

People had to wait 2 hours to vote at that polling station, while he was ushered straight in. I'd boo too if I was in the queue! Not to mention all the other reasons...

I was watching Arrow last night and it dawned on me...Jared Payne is Oliver McQueen...why has nobody noticed this before!

It's a disgrace that the senate has specifically pushed to reduce polling stations as it lowers turnout across the board but has a much bigger impact in heavy urban areas where they don't have a strong vote.

Honestly, politics in Ireland can be bad, but it's no where near as anti society as the crap they get away with in the US.

I've always been confused by the pictures of people queuing overnight to vote in the US. Innocent little me thought you'd think they'd open a few more poling stations to cut down these queues, I know they've a massive population but this is silly.

Turns out it's a deliberate effort to restrict certain groups from voting and that the Supreme court has basically gutted the voting act allowing states to pass whatever restrictions they want when it comes to voting.

If I was voting in America I would have zero confidence that my vote was actually going where it was supposed to.

The Supreme Court has gutted the act but when the Dems replace Scalia in the next terms (presuming Hilary wins) then I think its fair to say that a lot of this is going to be reversed along with much of the redistricting that has happened (gerrymandering).

I think it's a disgrace that the FBI did what they did last week in reopening the investigation. It will probably be what costs the Dems taking back the senate and may even impact the general.

    Country is a shambles.

It really is shocking how ignorant a lot of Americans are to what goes on in their own country. I saw something on twitter saying something like 20 million people early voted over a few days last week with the idea in their heads that the FBI had something on Hillary. I'd assume some of them are smart enough to make their own minds up about things and see the lies and tricks for what they are but it's painfully obvious that a lot of them aren't.

On a similar topic the documentary "13th" is worth watching if you have Netflix. I'ts primarily about the US prison system but it touches on voting rights and previous elections too.

Trump has lawyers in a court in Nevada at the moment trying to get the judge to order the release of data on people working at the polling stations. Also trying to get votes from a particular polling station to not be counted. Apparently it's from a largely Hispanic area where the polls closed early ( and people who were already in line were still allowed to vote, as is the law. Judge is having none of it.

Don't they need to win the Senate in order to appoint a new Justice?

It's quite incredible though, the GOP attacking people for simply going out and voting. It's disgusting really.

Senate just needs to approve, and typically they always have. This is the first senate that has refused to approve until the next election cycle though Ted Cruz is talking about waiting 4 years in case Hilary wins. It's a mess.
