Do you have to post in the log book to tax the car?

I recently bought a car and was told the log book was sent in but it wasn't, the previous owner has now given me the log book and said it's possible to just go into the council to tax it and they'll take the log book off you and post out a new one?
Is this correct? I can't find the information online

Yes, you can change the ownership and tax all in one go at your local motor tax office. They will keep the VRC and a new one will come in the post from Shannon a few days later.

And before anyone asks you're only liable from now. You don't have to pay back tax :)
