......and yet the applications keep flooding in. I wonder why?

Because people want to do the job!

Exactly. Even at the rate of pay that existed before the government gave into the GRA yesterday. Can't be that bad of a job now can it?

The International Monetary Fund has issued a warning on public sector pay, saying the Government should contain the wage bill as the advancing recovery starts to “fire on all cylinders”.
    ....

In addition, the IMF called for further efforts to broaden the tax base and said the proceeds of bank privatisations should be used to pay down public debt.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/business/economy/imf-warns-that-public-sector-pay-should-be-contained-1.2153522

so we're warned against increasing public servant salaries and reducing the tax Base and that's precisely what we're doing. we just don't seem to be very bright.

We can't all get in the public sector gravy train now can we? Silly argument

So best not to try at all then?

It's pretty much career guidance 101 in Ireland that if you want a permanent, well paid, pensionable job you look to the public sector, be it police, army, teaching, nursing, whatever.

    Luas are looking for drivers.

No there not! I have tried.

Nope but fight your corner. Meek = nil.

You've missed my point. The public sector can always get roughly what they want cos they can hold the population of the country to ransom. 200 people in a multinational company don't have that luxury. The gardai have not shown balls. ....they have shown how greedy they are by essentially putting civilians at risk of burglary, car theft etc.....just so they can get a real handy 3600 euro extra.

€4,500 "rent allowance" for everyone , regardless or whether you're renting or not? Thats a piss take, as is getting €15 quid extra per day for taking your holidays.

Jaysus the jobs must be all gone.

Thanks..... you've just proved my point. ...."permanent, well paid, pensionable". .....and yet they still want more and more and the people see no improvements in their security.

Well it can't be that bad of a job I suppose considering what you might be exposed to, mentally or physically, I think alot of people had complaints about various things which all seemed to link back to pay and conditions. I am going to trying to join at the moment. I know what I am getting into I have been a reserve, it's not an easy job, I know the shifts and pay, but mind you if I am not suited for it I will resign. But I am lucky in that I can fall back on an IT career.

I'm guess alot of people like me joined, but finance wise it just can't work maybe and it's between this job for them or get another. And it's alot of work to become a member, so I guess they choose to go down fighting.

And to be honest with you, it very very easy to apply, what you need to find out is figures that took the stage 2 in house aptitude tests.

Regardless, I would rather pay as a taxpayer for well paid front line staff who are committed and happy in there jobs, than have my USC back or giving bonuses to welfare for a fiver back a week. As for the higher earning Civil Service getting there pay restored aka TDs Ministers, they should have started restoring pay from the bottom up not from the top down, that was a shotgun moment to the foot.

Tbh they couldn't all be naive. People applied in their thousands! !

Ever spoken to a successful one?

A bouncer would do well to become a Garda. You don't exactly need to be a genius to join the force, hence we have over 16,000 applications. ;)

You don't have to be a genius but plenty are close enough.

Best of luck in your career choice tallglass. I'll admit i was going to apply until i read about the age limits. Please don't turn into one of those scarcastic feckers that thinks he's robocop! Lol!

Why don't they? You can't just fire people, if you are in a union and vote to strike, then you can strike, if your fire then it could be quite costly for the employer. As for multinationals pulling out of Ireland, because of staff going on strike, the EU should block relocation in the EU (wouldn't happen I know) but it is not as easy as sacking workers and moving on.

I was unhappy in my last job I aired my reasons for a pay rise. I didn't get it, I moved jobs. It's slightly easier for me, as a Garda/Nurse/FF, you can't exactly do it the same extent and besides you shouldn't have to move jobs, and you can't turn the Gardai or FF into a revolving door like some door to door sales role, the country be a shambles with a police force like that.

Fair play, I for one think the age limit should be pushed higher for people if it makes a difference.

Yep my wife's cousin is currently in training. I'm delighted for him cos i think it's something he always wanted to do. He is probably old school in the sense that pay is not the number one focus for him. ...it's more the sense of servitude, and being happy with his career choice. Imo i think he will be a great garda.....

Oh i wouldn't hide my opinion of these events from him. In a few years he will be earning way more than the current average industrial wage plus benefits. I think he will be quite ok.....as will most of the public sector. ..

Well, let's hope he can manage on the wages. Lots can't unfortunately & we lose a lot of good young Gardai because they try but fail to manage on the wages.
Not to mention all the people who could make great Gardai but find better paid jobs elsewhere

It's more the hypocrisy of it, 'they are sleeping in cars', Are the gardai snapchatting themselves in their pjs in their cars?

The rest of the PS should now demand equivalent pay rises, or they'll also be sleeping their cars. And the State will go bankrupt once again.

It's not accepted as yet. They might go back for more yet. They deserve it.

How much do you think they deserve to be paid? What would you say is a fair wage for them?
