If you are getting phantom odours on and off, you should maybe visit the doctor - it could be the sign of a medical problem...

Some form of epileptic event. The same thing can cause Déjà vous. However I've noticed them for years, since I was a child, and I'm ok so far.

I have been haunted by an event that happened in my family home when I was 16 years old. It has stayed with me throughout my life and I have never been able to logically explain it.

When I was 16, I lived with my mother, my older sister and my younger brother in a 3 bedroom house. It was a rough area of Dublin and I know that our mother found it tough. It would have been so easy for a lad like me to go down the wrong side of the tracks.

My younger brother and I shared a room together. Our room was at the end of the hallway. The door always had to be kept open at night because my brother, who was 8 at the time, couldn't sleep in the dark. I'd gotten used to it though, so it didn't bother me.

One night I was playing with my phone, it was one of those early clam shell camera phones. I looked up and in the hallway, I saw a black, human shaped silhouette and it was facing my sister's bedroom, just staring in.

I remember just laying there, petrified, watching it for a while. I looked over to my brother, whose bed was on my right. He was fast asleep. I didn't dare try to wake him up in case I caught the attention of the thing in the hall. I looked back to the hallway and the apparition was now facing my room, staring straight in at me. I was so frightened, I couldn't even scream.

Suddenly it started moving into our room towards me. Instinctively I dove under the covers. All night, I lay there still and not once did I look out, in case it was next to me. I can't explain how utterly terrified I was, laying there under the covers.

Even when morning came and everyone started to get up and go to the kitchen for breakfast, I still remained in bed. When I did get up, I told everyone what I had seen however, they did not believe me.

As the years have gone by, I have never forgotten that night and what I saw. Many times I've asked myself, "was it a dream?", "was it my mind playing tricks on me?" The things that convince me that the experience was real, were that I was wide awake and hadn't been asleep when I saw it. And from the point of seeing it, to getting out of bed the following morning, I did not fall asleep.

I'm sceptical of 'the paranormal' and those who say that they can communicate with ghosts, but I have not been able to explain what I saw that night.

Maybe it WAS real -- a burglar? Intruder, Peeping Tom? Some visitor looking for the loo?

That would freak me out more than if it was a ghost!

    Sleep apnea. Pretty scary stuff.

Most recently, I awoke to the feeling of something choking the life out of me while another malevolent entity watched. I could only feel the one on my chest, with the invisible hands around my neck but I saw the one watching me. It looked like a solid shadow and I felt like it was waiting patiently for me to die. But that wasn't the scary part. The scary part was the knowledge that I was at looking the end and all that awaited me was an abyss of nothing.

I get the scent of roses and once the strong scent of hyacinth. No flowers in the vicinity at the time. It makes me think of my grandmother. And she used to get phantom whiffs of cigarette smoke, which she connected to a relative who had passed away long before that.

I get the smoke thing all the time.
I haven't gone to a doctor or anything because I'm otherwise as healthy as can be, I put it down to a sinus problem, they give me a bit of grief.

Google says it's either that or brain tumour.....or a ghost:eek:

I'm going on the principle of common things are common - sinus problem it is!

I used to work in a warehouse. It was an early starting job and sometimes I get up even earlier to get food from a nearby 24hr deli and take it back to the apartment.
Anyway I was walking home from the deli and I met this man.
He wasn't that old. He was hanging around a cross-street shouting and going nuts.
He was crawling on the ground one second and saluting the heavens the next. All the while shouting in a rage.
I picked up my pace whilst keeping a eye this fella.
He ran right up to me and started roaring about how he was going to kill me in all these brutal ways.
Well my adrenaline kicked in and I barked at him to f off or else. He just stood there for a few seconds looking enraged - he looked driven mad with anger.
Off he went then, away from me, shouting and gesticulating again.
I got home, had breakfast and went to work.
It was only later I thought back on how insane that encounter was.

By the time my granny died at a ripe old age, she'd been detecting those smells for a long time and she didn't have a brain tumour when she died, if that's any comfort. She'd never had any -(other, maybe?) -symptoms of epilepsy either. I'd expect sinus problems to cause other, more obvious symptoms but I'm not a doctor and could be wrong.

Also a sign of migraines, phantom cigarette-smoke smells are a sure sign for me I'm getting one. They're overpowering to the sufferer but have no basis in reality, it's just your brain deciding to be a d*ck.

I often get "silent migraines", which have all the aura symptoms but not the headache. Pretty scary as it feels like you're having a stroke, but following an MRI, migraines were diagnosed.

Sometimes my auras are so weird, developing the headache is almost a "relief", because then you can identify what it is!

I'm not sure this counts but years ago I was working on my own in an old Woolsworth-type store that had closed down (for younger readers think 'Pound Shop' or any shop selling mounds of gaudy tat for buttons). I was there to meet unpaid suppliers who were few and far between so I decided to do a stock take to pass the time.

After a couple of hours I was starting to regret this decision as it was taking ages, the light was fading and the electricity had been cut-off due to the business closing down. It was an enormous creaky old building and the windows were rattling in the wind so I was starting to get slightly creeped out as I went down unlit corridors and up wonky stairs wondering was that door over there open when I passed earlier and what was that noise whenever a window or door shook.

Then, in a shop full of tat, I came across the Tat di tutti Tati, a pile of gaudy mirrors hanging on a wall which had images on them. Mostly they were images of God (!) but stuck in the middle was one with Samantha Fox in all her glory on it. For the laugh I recorded this as: 1 X Samantha Fox Mirror and under 'value' I put 'Priceless'.

Tension broken somewhat, I was still chuckling away when I moved on to the next mirror which had an image of God like you see in old farmers kitchens on it. As I was moving, I said out loud, 'Sorry about that God' and, I swear, God's eyes followed me! When I scraped myself off the ceiling I had a closer look and yep, God's eyes were 3D.

I do not know what cretin thought this would be good seller even in rural Ireland at the time but I reckon he owes me about 10 years of my life.

That gave me such a feeling of deja vu I had to go search for something I remembered liking on FB!
    Was this the holographic Jesus???

Just like that, except the background was a mirror. The real killer was only the eyes were 3D. If the whole image was 3D I might have picked it up, before the heart-attack inducing shock.

I have an odd one. Had a terrible dream a while back - cars suspended in a white box, people bending over someone who couldn't move, lots of blood on the green, peeson unconscious, big panic going on. I woke up CONVINCED my cousin had been in a car crash & was so convinced I texted him at stupid o'clock to see if he was OK. Turns out he was. But, I found out later my aunt ( not his mother but I visit her a lot & we are close enough) had fallen from her bed onto the (green) carpet & both my uncles had driven over that night by chance & were able by chance to see if they could help. she was in a coma from a bad head injury & was left not able to walk. She live(d) alone & her room is white in a room Always very sunny with a lush green carpet.
    Seriously creepy.

Id a dream a while back about a newspaper headline saying that Paul Daniels had died. About a week later it was reported he'd died. I hadn't heard anything about him for about 30 years so where that dream came from I haven't a clue.
This morning just before I woke up I had a dream that Meatloaf's management released a statement saying he'd died. Don't know why I dreamed that either. It's ages since I heard anything about him.

You'd almost hope the Meat Loaf one doesn't happen and then you dream about, let's say Gay Byrne and he does pop his clogs, because you know ... 2 out 3 ain't bad.
