We constantly hear that Ireland is like the last outpost not Europe with the new world just over the horizon, so if you hopped on a raft and went straight you would end up in New York. Reality is you'd end up in the back arse of nowhere, the map that we see makes it seem as if the Americas are relatively close by but reality is so so much different. "Closer to Boston to Berlin" maybe so but Ireland will always be an island off mainland Europe, it's here we are and will be for the next million years or so.

This is a quote from Mary mccallese to describe Ireland's weird relationship with our European brothers and american cousins. We don't have a common European heritage or narrative like the others, the Romans never came here, Charlemagne means nothing to us while to mainland Europeans he is the father of Europe. However despite this our location ultimately binds us to the mainland and will do far after this relatively recent smattering of Anglo cultures has gone

The original inhabitants of Australia have stories going back thousands of years. Stories that are older than the Island of Ireland. Because it wasn't an island during the last ice age. And won't be during the next one either.

American here, reflecting that good people who care are good people who care, no matter whether or not they win elections. All it will take is for us to reach across the boundaries of nations, parties, races, etc. and work together to make life better for everyone.

I'm so sorry America chose to make it harder today.

To my utter embarrassment I discovered the other day that Mary Shelley (of Frankenstein fame) was a woman.

For some unfathomable reason I always thought it was a man with an odd name.

There are no good people in elections.

    It's not entirely true.
Cars that don't have the arrow have the petrol tank on the drivers side. But if the arrow is there, it points to the side of the car where the pump goes.

That's useful but you need to know what side your exhaust exit is on, and if you knew that why don't you know what side your fuel filler cap is on?

My car doesn't have an arrow and the filler cap is on the passenger side.

Is my car trying to prank me?
