There is no legal age limit for this. ISPCC believes it should be 16, a number of social workers I know feel that for 12-16 an hour or two alone is ok, but a whole day is not acceptable. Despite there being no legal requirement some child agencies have said that parents who leave their kids alone, especially at night, could be charged with negligence.

Apparently my parents should have been charged multiple times with negligence. It really does depend on the child but too be honest, but at secondary school level, if you cannot leave them alone for a few hours then, you have to question either your child or your parenting/coping skills.

I disagree. Maturity does not occur as one movement with children and can hit at various times, that isn't necessarily a reflection of parenting.

You are of course correct and there are several situations where this of course applies in no way shape or form. There are cases where the child may not be left alone for various reasons and have nothing to do with parenting, jokingly, a neighbour of mine whose daughter who has been occupied by a demon (and this has nothing to do with the parenting), should not be left alone. Although she probably should not be left with people either, so that one is a catch 22.

I just mean that in a large volume of cases, in my opinion, there would be nothing wrong with leaving a secondary school student alone for a few hours. Some kids could be left alone before secondary school, I was, so were many of my friends, probably not very long but at least an hour if not two.

It's no longer acceptable to write to your father in Malta asking for permission to sail to Wild Cat Island with your pre-teen siblings and camp solo there for a fortnight.

A mention of Trump/Clinton reminded me of this Bukowski piece written nearly 50 years ago

you can bust OPEN CITY for printing a normal portion of the human body but when you kick the editorial writer of a million circulation newspaper in the ass you better watch out, he just might start writing the truth about Chicago and everyplace else, advertisers be damned. he might only be able to write one column but that one column might get a million readers thinking – for a change – and nobody could tell what might happen then. but the lock’s on tight: when you are given a choice between Nixon and Humphrey it’s like being given a choice between eating warm **** or cold ****.

Very close by from the SUV and the majority of the comments have to say is that the kid is not wearing a helmet. Yeap, because if you get run over by an SUV the helmet is going to stop it.

Quick description of the history of cycling in ireland in the examiner today.

In other news it is friday afternoon of a bank holiday weekend, I arrived into the office before the sun came up this morning and I left late yesterday - I am looking forward to going home but in a good humoured way. Roll on the long weekend.

I thought you might be exaggerating but then...

The most surprising thing is that those comments are posted on a cycling site. It's like a bunch of battered women giving advice to each other about not to annoy their abusive partners*.

(* it's domestic violence simile day today; I'm giving myself a break from Nazi metaphors)

Those comments made my blood boil, they are easily the worst i have ever seen. I have to assume it a an organised troll and not in any way representative of the views of a random sample of people.

Unbelievable, truly unbelievable. making my good mood for a bank holiday weekend dissipate.

weird that so many comments are being made like that on what seems to be a cycling advocacy site - has it been overrun?

Some of the worst scaremongers about cycling are cyclists themselves.

The comments get pulled from Facebook which would explain a lot.

Probably accidentally guilty of it myself, using strong and emotive language to describe events which I myself did not think were that dangerous. Although the comments do go to show that idotic sense of blame that is attributed to cyclists in near misses and collisions.

I have heard many people say it, look at that muppet, nearly getting hit by a car (who swerved in to close), no helmet, no hi vis. As if somehow the absence of perceived necessary (a discussion for two other threads) safety equipment, shifts the blame from the perpetrator to the victim. There are other examples of this in life, and the funny thing is that I do not think that some people realise the idiocy of their statements.

Low maintenance, it's meant to last 1,000 years. Riders can only indicate right turns though.

if i was considering building a bike up from a frame myself, what sort of budget would i need to consider for the 'miscellaneous' items on the list - i.e. bar tape, cables & housings, etc. etc.
currently on the list i have frame, groupset, wheels, seatpost, saddle, tyres, stem, bars, pedals, and 'miscellaneous'.

also to budget - €100+ for when i need to go crying to the LBS to fix whatever i've done wrong myself.

Quite interesting article about low-income immigrant workers who get around on very cheap bikes in southern California, often covering large distances.

What about taking a wander down to Rothar in Fade Street; they put old bikes together all the time to give them away to the needy, and will know the answer inside out.

I was a bit disappointed to open the link and not see a pic of Roz Purcell, but it does look like a good idea.

Would anyone have a source for replacement "atop" dials. I specifically need a left dial.
