Glider cart not starting evenly - looking for advice

When I rotate the potentiometer slowly to start the cart, nothing happens. If I rotate it much further then suddenly the cart jumps forward quickly and I have to wind back the knob to get it to go at a reasonable speed. It then behaves correctly for a while - slower or faster as required. At the next start the same thing happens sometimes, and sometimes not.
I assume the control is just a simple potentiometer and wonder does it just need cleaning. Or are there some electronics involved?
Any advice, suggestions appreciated.

Unfortunately I think you will need to replace the handle as I have when the same thing happened and many of my friends have over the years. As far as I recall it's not too expensive if you can get it to Keswick in Churchtown http://www.golfglider.ie/

HHHmmmm!! I was afraid you would say that!!
Many thanks for the link to the supplier. Looking at the part it seems easy to fit. I'll go get the screwdriver tomorrow!!
