I've one foot back in the hype pool. It looks like a nice piece of kit and I like the portable aspect of it especially for commutes and the like. I wonder though if it will require a 3G/4G connection in order to use the device when out of the house.

Looks like a nice space saver that won't take up too much room which I like but I need to know what games we're getting before I jump into the hype headfirst.

Nice piece of kit as I say but I need a large array of games to play on it. Don't need AAA. I have an XB1 and a PS4 for that. I need innovative games on a regular basis.

    Yep. Spot on.

As for if the dock adds any more oomph: No. Just a dock.

    [From IGN]

......Nintendo continued: "The dock is not the main console unit of Nintendo Switch. The main unit of Nintendo Switch is the unit that has the LCD screen, which the two Joy-Con controllers can be attached to and detached from. The main function of the Nintendo Switch Dock is to provide an output to the TV, as well as charging and providing power to the system."...

I think it would be great if the tablet could run Android apps or games. I'd ditch all my other devices, except my phone, if that was the case!!

The 3 minute reveal ad is up there with some of the worst ads contestants of the apprentice have made.
You seem to be in the definite minority there, seeing as the presentation is getting pretty good and positive coverage out there.
I doubt even 1 percent of the people who would buy it would bring it outside to play in public like that, and if you're playing local multiplayer sure that's possible on every console.

    People bring Nintendo handhelds everywhere.
    People bring tablets everywhere.
The section of the market that Nintendo has made most of it's money from has been in the portable sector, people who will be bringing the hardware out and about.
And, of course local multiplayer is available on other consoles, but if you are playing local multiplayer on a handheld, that handheld is very likely to be a Nintendo console.
One of Nintendo's central selling points over the last decade or more is encouraging play together, and that is what that portion of the presentation represents.
No pro gamer would put up with a set up shown at the end of that sequence. I just cringed the whole way through the ad.

Whatever you imagine a "pro gamer" to be, he or she is likely to be using a PC rather than a console, in truth, unless you think a "pro gamer" is something else....

And while I respect you don't appear to have liked the advert, do you like Nintendo products in general? Because, if you don't get it, then no matter what the presentation looked like, it was unlikely to impress.

Perhaps when Call of Duty or Battlefield appear on the hardware it will make a difference to some close minded individuals.

The rest of us will go on enjoying playing what Nintendo do better than anyone else, making games.

It'll definitely play mobile stuff right? Mario run and pokemon go for definite.

I play my 3DS in any and all situations.

Any word on whether Wiiu games with be transferable? I've quite a few downloaded from the e-shop onto a hard drive (connected to the Wiiu) and would be great if they are compatible

Some talk that there will be different 'Joy-Con' controllers available to connect to the screen but Nintendo want to get the message of the system across first before complicating it.

I do like Nintendo, I just didn't like the ad. I hope the console does well. I might buy it if the price is right

What are the chances of being able to play online when not docked? Or out and about?? 4g built in???

I wouldn't really think so, but I would hope it could tether to your phone or something?

This part will be crucial to how this console survives IMO...

I imagine it's a given that it will be able to tether to your 3G/4G phone, as the 3DS is capable of this since launch. Maybe just maybe it'll have an option of adding a nano-sim for online connection without needing a smartphone, but this seems unnecessary. I think internet tethering is the way they'll go, since it should be sufficient.

I'd say there'll be no delay in such announcements, and Nintendo will have to pull up their socks and get demo units to shows soon, and drum up further interest.

So much for no delay. IGN said they reached out to publishers for comments and apart from Ubisoft confirming Just Dance, no one is saying anything. Bethesda won't even confirm Skyrim

Be interesting to see what the launch line up is apart from Zelda.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,219 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

So now it's announced they can get on to announcing TimeSplitters 4, Prince of Persia, Metroid and Lego City Undercover 2.

Wonder when the direct will be for launch. Or even just more games. Hopefully before the end of the year.

I'm surprised no one has commented yet on the logo/icon for the Switch, which is obviously inspired by yin and yang. Considering yin and yang is based on a philosophy of opposites or dualities that are interconnected, and the logo also resembling the detachable controllers which are used for both home and portable gaming, I consider it to be a superb design. :)

I'm hoping it's sturdy when removing and replacing the controller parts. The Switch 'click' is pretty awesome. That'll become a familiar sound when ads come on the tv.

Okay, I am a bit late to the party. I only sow the damn thing now and I don't know what to say about it. I am kind of... Excited, but very very concerned.

Now if this handheld will mean that I can get my next monster hunter, fire emblem in nice HD graphics and not pixelated mess, then i am on board already. I actually would love to have a new updated Nintendo handheld with proper power and screen in it.
So as a handheld for me, this is just amazing proposition. I am on board.
As a TV console.... I am not sold. I loved my wii u and second screen on controller was best part of it. In Monster hunter game it ment I had shortcuts on my specific items and other bits on screen that I could access directly. It was like an extra space to make your own buttons and short cuts.
this thing looks like won't be able to play on tv if the screen is not in that yolk. So wii u benefit kind of going out to the bin.

I kind of love it, if it brings all those cool unique games that can only be find on 3ds and wii u, but in portable, high resolution and power form, then I am sold.
Though I don't know about third party support again. It looks like it will be same as with wii u due to massive performance difference.

All in all I like it, but it depends now on price and what actual games it will have. If monster hunter on it, then my arguments and bitching is irrelevant, I will be the first one in queue to buy damn thing. :)

That's something that I never thought of. How would you play something like Mario Maker on a TV if you need to dock the tablet? Or can you use the tablet wirelessly if you turn the dock on?

I have a sneaky suspicion that the device will happily 'cast via the stand to your TV if you want to play games WiiU style.

I'd say we didn't see it because the haters are just going to zero in on it as a failed feature of a failed format, and extrapolate their horsesh1t from there.

Surprised nobody is worried about the fact that this runs off Carts in an age that uses either downloads or Blu-ray Discs. I know an SD card could be 128gb but that makes the production of the cart much too expensive.

I love the concept and it looks like Nintendo are already nailing the marketing of this but I can't see myself buying one.

DS and 3ds manage with carts.

3DS is outdated tech, this is a HD 1080p console/720p handheld.

Not sure how exactly a big game like Skyrim goes onto a cart provided the cart wasn't too expensive to produce.

3DS games are 0.5-3GB. The games for this system are sure to be many times bigger than that.

    Carts themselves are fine.

I've gotten used to downloading all my games and having them saved on the hard drive is really convenient. The fact that there is such a small amount of on board memory on the switch is a pro and a con. It means that there won't be room for any DLC, which means 3rd party developers won't want to develop for the console as a large part of their revenue stream is cut off.

Also, there won't be room for big patches, which means that games will actually have to be finished before they're released, but it also means if games have bugs, they're less likely to be fixed.

There was an SD slot mentioned previously, not by Nintendo themselves (yet) but I'd be shocked if it didn't have one, so hopefully that can be used to store/run games from and/or maybe it will have the ability to plug in an external drive to the dock. There's no way it can last with only 32GB of space.

    It's a bit of a weird one:

Absence of kids in the ad and grown up industrial design say a lot I think.

As ShadowHearth said the multi use case is going to be interesting for games designers. Do you implement touch features knowing that a segment of your use base will probably never take it out of the cradle?

How do Nintendo envisage people using this thing day to day. I'm guessing after the initial excitement of messing around most machines will live almost exclusively as a handheld or a console.

What will this cost? If it's expensive (300 euro plus) a lot of parents are going to be nervous letting their kids go out with it.

Which brings me to cases. It'll need one an it'll be awkward with the design.

I love a gimmick, but I'm really curious to see how Nintendo will push it to justify the design long term. I worry that there isn't a laser focus and that they're once again trying to kill two birds with the one stone. Looks much, much better than the WiiU though.

Actually one thing I just though off when you mentioned 7 year old.
I got 7 year old on the house and she loves her tablets, so I cam see her loving this, but at the same time I can see her losing those damn controllers in the first 24 hours.

I love mentioning above that ad was completely aimed at adults. It was really weird.

For portable system I got already some questions. If it is portable like this, then will it have some hdmi out port? I used to bring my ps3 to my buddies place, order pizzas, buy vodka and play some metal twister, taken or army of 2. If it works on tv only with that cradle, then it's such a missed opportunity.

Over the life of the wiiU Nintendo lost the sale of many games from me due to lack of space on the system. I never bothered to connect up an external HD and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
