Fibre speed issue

Hi

I've already been dealing with Vodafone on this but just wanted to see what some of the knowledgable folks here thought.

Upgraded to Fibre back in February. Was initially only getting about 1mb more than before (from 17 to 18) which I knew would be the case. After a couple of weeks noticed that the line was testing at 25mb so asked them to raise the speed which they did and everything worked flawlessly for 6 months after that (with 6mb upload).

About a month ago, noticed that my download speed had gone down to 20mb, then a couple of days later down again to 15mb. Got onto Vodafone through here to report the fault which was relatively useless to be honest.

Was contacted a couple of weeks ago by one of Vodafone's second level support techs who explained to me that there seemed to be a known issue with a number of customers whereby people who report a fault are deliberately throttled in order to try and figure out what the problem is but once the fault is fixed (which he said it was) are then left at the lower speed. He was investigating why this was and would get back to me.

Got a call today and he said that he'd heard back from Eir and the issue was that because there had been so many recent fibre connections in my exchange that now my line wasn't able to take the higher 6mb upload speed so the upload was reduced to 3mb and because the upload and download speeds are linked together, the download also had to be reduced (goes in 5mb increments) and basically there was nothing else that could be done. There was also no way of putting the download speed back up again by itself and leaving the download as it was.

He then mentioned that vectoring was being rolled out across the exchanges and eventually I may be able to achieve the speed that I was getting.

Another wrinkle in this is that shortly after I reported the fault, and Eir engineer did come out to the house and checked the main socket which was fine and said that my line was actually capable of taking up to 40mb.

Sorry for the length, but just wondering if what I've been told makes any kind of sense or am I being given the runaround?

I work in IT myself so I think I know when I'm being fobbed off which I don't think I am (the tech actually rang me the other day when he noticed that my broadband was down and was worried that there was another problem but the modem was just switched off as I was at work) but wouldn't mind a second opinion from here if possible.

Thanks.

He's telling the truth, at least mostly.

Profiles are fixed and you can select from the list. If either value is below the threshold you have to fall back to the lower profile to make things stable. If you signed up shortly after it was available the timeline makes sense.

Post your line stats from your modem and we can review.

Thanks for the reply. Here's my modem stats.

Indicates you're 1600-1700m from the cab, which is max range pre-vectored and close to full range of 2000m for vectored cabs.

At the moment 3Mb US is the best it will do and it would become intermittent at 4Mb
50 15
40 10
30 8
25 7
18 5
15 3
12 1
7 1

The next step up would be 5Mb up which currently isnt an option.

If you managed 25_5 before then falling back to 18_5 with increased usage wouldnt be too bad but 15_3 is a big move. It would be worth checking your neighbours lines on either side to see if you're on or below par as its still possible theres a fault they're fobbing off.

Hmm, just checking my neighbours details on both the Digiweb line checker and Vodafone's own tester get my neighbours on each side 25mb no problem.

Would an internal fault on my line be causing this kind of issue even though it was perfectly stable on 25mb before for 6 months?

So, just another big of info if anyone wants to make any suggestions.

I've checked the speeds that all my neighbours houses on the same road are capable of getting, and all 8 of them are apparently capable of getting 25mb. Would this indicate that I'm either being fobbed off for some reason, or that there could be an internal fault on my line?

Our voice calls are fine, no noises or crackles or anything like that and decent quality.
