Did you ever notice that you sound different in a recording?

I found out something today that the way you sound in a recording is actually how others hear you. I never thought i was that bad to others.

I'd say you don't sound as bad as you think. It's a natural thing, especially if you are not used to it but there are good reasons for it.

The voice you hear mostly comes through your body to the ear canals. Very little of what you hear comes from the surrounding air. That coupled with the fact that it is the main way we all hear ourselves make it more than a bit strange.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

Inside my head I have a voice like Jim Morrison.
Outside my head it sounds more like Jim Bowen.

The voice of the German man in my head sounds weird.

It's true ye, you sound different to yourself than to others due to the effect of vibrations in your bones being picked up by only your ears.

All those terrible singers who go on talent shows like xfactor have never heard a recording of themselves. That's the problem.

I sound the same on proper microphones as I do in my head.

Where did you hear your own voice? In a highly compressed recording on your mobile through the microphone that cost pennies, played back through a tinny speaker.

Most people have the ability to have quite a nice sounding voice if they just slowed down and actually tried to say words correctly and didn't spit out nasal half words off the tip of their tongue, anyway.

What are you saying, I need a microphone?

I'm asking how you heard your own voice? If you went on the radio and listened back, you'd hear that you are just a semitone higher in real life vs in your head.

compared to sounding like a nasal chipmunk when you hear yourself on a mobile phone microphone

I'm often recorded as part of my job. I hate how I sound. I sound like a reasonably articulate hamster.

look on the bright side, it would be worse if you sounded like an inarticulate hamster :)

I sound like an awful bogger but in my head I have a lovely smooth voice like Morgan Freeman.

Then you'd have to listen to my lectures. It wouldn't be worth it. :)

A self deprecating hamster too? probably even more rare than an articulate hamster. You could have your own TV program

I know that feeling, son, footing turf all day, the internal monologue talking about long cool glasses of water and sitting in the sun having a beer and feeling like a free man. Some birds are not meant to be caged, their colours are too bright, their song is too sweet...

I once phoned in and talked to a (rather piss taking) Radio 1 DJ.

We had a little chat. Then, twenty minutes later, after the crafty bugger had obviously played and replayed our recorded conversation back to himself, he told the listeners he'd been talking to Stigura. Who'd said .....

F**ker then went on to paraphrase me, imitating my voice. Only, it sounded like Bob Hoskins doing Hannibal f**king Lector!!! :pac:

Does anyone remember the ad on tv years ago. The one where the nice looking man walks by and the girls eye him up. Then he starts talking on the phone and sounds like the biggest bogger ever? I'm the female version of him. I hate my voice. I especially hate leaving a voice mail. I always rush it and then it sounds twice as bad.

As Tommy Tiernan said, the Cork accent sounds like a tinker trying to speak French.

I hate all the times I record some random videos on my camera phone and I make some 'off the cuff, witty comment' (Or at least attempt it) I sound oddly deep and muffled like I'm talking throw a empty toilet roll tube. Or maybe even kitchen roll. And its hard to sound witty sounding like that!

Time and time again I swear I will not commentate over my next random video. Time and time again I open my big mouth and it speaks through the invisible toilet roll tube.

Is the OP seriously telling us that they only heard themselves on a recording recently???

FFS! I was born in 1971 and heard myself on a recording by at least the age of 8! It was a cassette tape via a microphone! Hi ****ing tech!

I sound like a 20 year old South side girl.....when in reality I'm a 30 year old woman from the Northside.

I think it comes from the 4 years I spent in UCD!

I sound melodiously sexy on tape.

I don't like the sound of my own voice in recordings either. It sounds higher than I hear it and a bit whiny. But I've been assured by others that my voice is not too high for a man.:pac:

Everybody says that when they hear a recording of their voice.

I hate my own voice when I hear it back on a recording too. Sounds a lot deeper, and worse still, posher. I'm doing a radio interview in a couple of weeks and trying to persuade my wife not to record it :)
