    Mod:
After Hours is not the place to.....

Has anyone more questions as to why AH has gone to sh*t...?

Ah, I remember laughing at all those people campaigning to get Leo an Oscar for such a long time. I threw my own at the TV when I saw he finally got his for The Revenant. That movie was sh1te!

He has better hair than you though Nic, and he looks better with a beard. The last time I saw you with a goatee, I could actually count the number of hairs.

Nick Cage it seems like After Hours is fast becoming "not the place" to discuss anything!

I respect the Mods have a job to do and I'm sure they're all sound people. I just don't get it regarding AH though. Surely it should be exactly what it says on the tin?

As long as I can still shoe horn Father Ted quotes into any thread I'll still be happy. That's the great thing about After Hours, it's so vague and no one really knows what it's all about.

We don't talk about mod actions on thread which is what is being referenced in this case.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=63136991#post63136991

We take that off thread because it's not fun for others to read and derails a thread.

ps - I'm not sound. :pac:

    ^^ what Boom_Bap said.

Unless you think it should be a free-for-all and dumping ground for absolutely anything and everything, of course. But it won't. And it's not because mods are being overzealous. It's because mods are trying to keep some form of discussion going in this forum.

Isn't life just mad? I think I first experienced the internet around 1998/99. If someone told me 20 years ago that one day I will witness Jesus complaining to Nicolas Cage about the severity of how he wields his power, I would have said you were batsh1t crazy! We really never know.

Sorry Nic. I just can't help giving you sh1t every once in a while.

No, I absolutely don't think it should be free for all dumping ground.
Saying that, I also don't think mods should jump in whenever and wherever they please and attempt to shape the discussion to match their personal "standards".

If OP him/herself doesn't mind, if users don't flood you with reports, law isn't being broken - why interfere and kill the joy?

I don't know what you mean by matching personal standards. Mods do little more than clean the place up when it needs 'cleaning'.

But mods don't do that. As you know, we're not sitting at our computers (with no light) reading every post that becomes posted. We mostly react to reported posts, but sometimes randomly stumble upon something that needs action. There are often times a thread goes way off-topic and for whatever reasons, mods don't see it for a few hours. If we see the reports and the off-topicness has died down in the meantime, we leave it alone. Retroactive modding is only done if the thread has gone completely to sh1t.

Because that's the only other alternative available?

What most posters want is a lighter touch moderation of the forum.

That means inconsistency as what 1 person thinks is fine, 10 others may not.

There's a problem with that in and of itself. Its undemocratic for one. Lets say 100 people are viewing a thread and 1 person reports a post. 99 people have no problem with it but 1 person does and it results in the poster being banned for a few days. 1% dictating to 99%.

I've never reported anyone on the internet in my life nor would I ever dream of doing it. If somebody says something I don't like I handle it. I'm an adult after all. On here you could have a small number of serial reporters who's complaints are acted upon repeatedly while the vast majority of people who are grown ups are being dictated to by a bunch of cranks who can't help themselves but get offended at everything and anything they hear. Its a tail wagging the Dog type situation.

And that's not even taking into consideration that this Forum is called After Hours which suggests that an overly sensitive person probably wouldn't find it suitable and therefore shouldn't prowl the Board looking for offence.

I'm sorry but its not the way an AH section should be run IMO.

Could we bring in a system where posters only get banned after a public poll/lynch mob has deemed them worthy of the ban?! That would liven things up.

Just because something is reported it doesn't mean action is taken.
If there is something that's not clear, the mods get talking about it to make a decision, if we can't we call in the CMods to help out. Sometimes the Admins even step in.

We also want to welcome everybody into AH.

    Let's begin.

Who wants Winterlong to be banned? :D:D

It would be better if there was a table on the amount of reports individual posters send to the Mods. I'm sure there'd be a certain number of them that do it regularly.

It might shame them into stopping that childish behaviour.

Perfect scenario: 1 mod vs 10 users.
Hence threads like this come up.

I could go on and give a few examples, but:

    1. I've no interest in stirring the sh*t, I'm quiet and don't post much anyway.
    2. Apparently AH isn't the right place to discuss such issues - I've nothing more to add in "catch 22" situation users are in.

and 3... Since when mod decides what people want and don't want to read, like it took place a few posts above? "Let's delete the content within 3 seconds, because people have no interest".

That's only my bit, carry on. I will read everything or else I pick another thread to read.

It's a sitewide thing. I used to love boards, I'd spend a couple of hours each evening reading through it. Now it's a couple of hours a week, and it's more a force of habit rather than finding anything interesting.

Yeah I think this sums up me. I used to love the site in general, but as the years have gone on I've just been honing in on specific threads in specific forums.

But then bound to happen when it became the behemoth it did, and can appreciate why the site isn't just a "message board" anymore considering the traffic and wide berth of people that come here now, and the name boards has in general Irish society.

Although that name went from what was once a just generic " Hey read this thing on boards" to now being a bit of a joke, where if someone says somnething totally inaccurate or correct its a "oh did you read that on boards?"

I never really got after hours for a number of years as I found it pretty unfunny (when seemingly people thought it was hilarious) and a lot of the stuff just thank baiting. But I did become more interested in it when the more serious stuff in society popped up, and it stayed someone sserious.

But then that isn't the point of the forum
