Sitting here in GP surgery writing this, only coming in for checkup and get results from blood test. Lady patient sitting across from me grollying up phlegm and blowing nose and sniffing and coughing without even putting hand over mouth. My agitatiness is going into overdrive. I haven had s cold for ages and now frightened I am gonna catch a stinker of a cold (or even worse, man flu!) In the next couple of days. My only crime, to be just waiting in waiting room with her! Do you think people should wear masks when they got a cold like they do in Tokyo is it?

I think they wear masks in Tokyo because they are afraid of SARS, not a cold.

I doubt she's visiting a GP just because of a cold. It's most likely an ebola/AIDS thing she has and you'll be dead by the evening.
And we'll remembwe you fondly despite your ****e threads..... ohh look my toast is ready.

Colds aren't even that bad, good workout for your immune system. Maybe everyone reacts differently, but I find a runny nose and a bit of a cough is annoying at most.

Agreed. Indeed I've been worried I've not come down with one for a while, but seem to have caught one in the last few days. Being a bloke with google at his disposal I have correctly concluded that I'm suffering from pneumonic plague and won't see the morrow. Or a head cold.

I have - what Hollywood actresses claim to have as an excuse for a nose job - a deviated septum. I got that from shoving a tyre off a Corgi toy car(Man from U.N.C.L.E model) up my nostril and not mentioning it for months. I must point out I was a toddler at the time. :D But it ors mean that I get extremely snot blocked with a head cold and sleep becomes very fugitive. TBH a flu can sometimes be less uncomfortable.

Colds are great. Perfect excuse to drink loads of hot whiskeys and get smashed. Embrace them I say.

No, I think it would create an unnecessary fear amongst people and make waiting in the doctors awkward.

Yes, I absolutely think they should.
I pick up colds ridiculously easy and it's a pain in the ar*e.
I do like the excuse to drink booze when I'm sick, though, but it's not worth it just for that.

no, I dont think its that - I googled this when i got home to see why they wear masks , it ranged from believe it or not fashion, and people not wanting to pick up germs, to people being considerate and not wanting to spread germs to being unaproachable to wearing them because of hay fever/ pollen!

The solution is that if you don't want a cold you wear the mask. Then you can occasionally decide, when its convenient, to give your immune system a work out by not wearing it. Course you may not get one then.

You really do need a hobby , something to get you out of the house.
Maybe chain saw juggling or unicorn racing.

I think we should all wear power ranger masks.

I think there should be a different attitude to people turning up to work sick. Both from the business and from staff.

It is not a badge of honour to arrive in like an extra from Outbreak. You should be at home, under a blanket. Not infecting the rest of us.

And don't even think about touching my keyboard. You plague you.

Absolutely not, it's because they have a cold, or some other illness they would not like to pass on to anybody else. The only thing they'd be trying to prevent is hayfever allergies.

How effective the masks actually are I'm not sure, but if nothing else, it's a gesture of concern for the welfare of others.

well said - i think said in that article they changed to non-woven disposable masks since 2002 , more effective masks than before apparently
