Hi all. I have a quick question. I am alternating two pairs of runners - an older pair that i use for my LSRs and some short ones and an new pair that I am breaking in using on short runs. I was planning on using the older ones to run the marathon as they should have plenty of miles in them yet.

I put them on yesterday and my right one felt ....weird. Like it had all gone squishy and unsupportive. They were fine the day before! I checked the laces, the undersole etc. to make sure there was no visable damage that may be causing it. Didnt risk running in them and they still feel weird today (dont know what I was expecting!)

So should i just retire them and go with my new ones until DCM. I have a 19 miler tomorrow (HHN2) so it would be a good test.

    Anyone ever have this experience?

My advice would be start using the new ones for the LSRs now, and keep the old ones for shorter stuff. If they still feel wrong after a few more short runs, bin them.

How old are they? You might be surprised how many miles you have put on them with marathon training.

Also did they get very wet recently? Sometimes I find that if the runners get really soaked, it can take a few days for the sponginess to "recover", once all the water is gone.

    +1 to PMN.

Whatever you do, if you end up using the "new" ones for the marathon, make sure to have a couple of LSRs in them. Assuming they haven't been causing you any problems on the shorter runs, I wouldn't wait.

I'm running tomorrow. The plan is to enjoy it. i have no time goal as such but I hope to run somewhere around pmp depending on conditions. If its as bad a day as FD I will be winding that back . Not very adventurous I know but its my first hm and I just want to enjoy the experience . I'll be adopting the same approach in the marathon and as tomorrow is a trial run for the big day it makes sense to see how it works for me.

    Hi all,
trying to write my plans for the next few weeks and yes it looks like a 2 week taper but even in that 2 weeks this is the first week :
    Monday 7km
    Tuesday 14km
    Wednesday Spin class
    Thursday 19kms
    Friday rest
    Saturday 9km
    Sunday rest

The week of race its only a few Kms here and there but does 19km still seem long for 2 weeks out ?

I will have done 4 long runs of about 30/32kms - I know I am meant to trust my plan as I would have no idea whats right or whats wrong but surely the plans are right ?

You know, that's not a bad idea! I could definitely bring flapjacks if nop doesn't mind handing over the baton over to me?

Love your flapjacks I'll be there !!!

Hi nop, Yep I'm doing it tomorrow. I'm planning to go out a little behind the 2 hour pacers and see how far I can keep them in sight. I've never been under 2 hours in a half in the park and what with the rain and wind forecast I don't expect to get under 2 tomorrow either so will adapt as I go. The still, sunny and cool conditions this morning would have been perfect. Aw well - the weather is out of our control so all we can do is design around it.

    My race number is: 8726

Will keep an eye out for you where you said you'd be but you may be gone to the finish by the time I pass.

Thinking the exact same thing myself would love the sub 2 hour but not sure the conditions will allow it should around this time hopefully myself so see ya there !:)

19km looks long but when you set it to miles, its only 12 miles so no thats standard for two weeks out.

It wouldnt kill you to leave out the spin class and take a day off instead.

Just looked at my own plan there and it also calls for 10/12 miles second last week.
I will probably only do 8 depending on how I feel.

    Cheers Joesoap5 !
yea will see how I feel but probably doing 19kms after doing 30kms will seem short !!!!

The very best of luck to everyone racing tomorrow and also to those doing their LSR....looking forward to reading the race reports. Wish I could go to cheer you all on (but mainly for the flapjacks :D ) Hope the weather is not as bad as predicted. Kin9pin and aceygray, glad to hear things are looking up, fingers crossed you will be back to full training shortly....and no more staying on the Boards past 11 Kin9pin - you need as much rest as we do :P

You know 12 miles will do nothing to benefit your marathon as its only a week out from it so if you feel like doing shorter mileage that week then don't feel bad.

Picked up one of those 24 hour bugs so no running yesterday. I'm taking today off as well even though I'm feeling okay now but moving my medium long run with MP from Saturday to Sunday and just doing a easy run tomorrow.

Good luck to everyone who is running the Dublin half marathon this weekend. Hopefully a few PBs on the cards.

Anyone know how long the battery life is in HRM's? I've been using mine about 7 months so far and I've not changed the battery.. contemplating changing the battery before tomorrows HM but don't want to **** with something that isn't broken...

That's what I'd do, J. If the weather is right I'll be trying to run a relatively even 1:35-1:36 pace so I'll keep an eye out for you if you want to join me. Same goes for anyone else in the 1:35ish bracket. I'll be the aul grey haired lad in the Crusaders vest. ;)

Sounds like a plan, D. I'll look out for you before the start.

For tomorrow, here's the super duper ultra secret totally confidential sign that will lead you to the flapjacks.

    JqCt4Qc.jpg?1

Of course there will be colourful polka dotted balloons too!

When you find me, you have two options to get your hands on a flapjack or two.

    1. You can do the delightfully dainty dance of joy with a person of your choice

    or

    2. You can give me the highly hilarious hugely original secret handshake.

Of course, if you're too wrecked for either, a hearty HI C! will do :D

See you all tomorrow! All the best of luck for you. Have a fab day, a great race and I'll see you around the course!

My race number is 7153. I'm half afraid to race it for fear I'll get injured or my body won't recover in time for the marathon, it would be such a shame for that to happen so close to it. I think I'm just going to go out and see how I feel when I cross the start line, I'm quite competitive so chances are my cautiousness might go out the window as soon as I set off! Either way it'll be nice to cross the finish line in one piece and to collect another medal and t-shirt to add to the collection.
Best of luck to everyone running in the morning, hopefully the weather won't be as horrific as it was for the FD10 mile.

I was expecting my legs to feel nice and fresh during my 2 mile easy run this evening since they'd had 2 days rest. They were the total opposite. Gonna do some foam rolling now but this does not bode well for tomorrow!

    Wed 21/9 & Thu 22/9 - Rest.

    Fri 23/9 - 2 miles @9:25 p/m.

Handy loop just to stretch the legs a bit for tomorrow.

Best of luck to everyone running in the morning. Hope all goes well!

Well I just had my 2 mile pre-race shuffle and I'm full steam ahead for tomorrow. Whatever's going on in my achilles region isn't bad enough to stop me doing the half marathon, but it's just about bad enough to make me worry about the cost. Still, gotta get me some of them flapjacks! :D

Good luck to everyone, hopefully get to meet some of you this time! My number is 182 and I'll be in blue shorts and an orange t-shirt.

I was the same, but thinking back I always feel worst on a Tuesday, following the rest on Monday! I think that's why we were to do the 2 miles today. You'll be grand :)

Good luck to everyone tomorrow and that includes those volunteering. The weather looks similar to FD10 https://www.yr.no/place/Ireland/Leinster/Phoenix_Park/hour_by_hour.html. Stay dry beforehand, use a bin bag (get it ready tonight) or if you want to be more upmarket like paddydriver, wear your Dealz poncho :D

Probably a good time to share a pic of me looking miserable running FD10. That's me in the green top, but look to my left for a visual warning against chafing! I usually double up on protection in the wet and wear a compression top.

Looking forward to the race reports.

Hang on, 19km on which Thursday is that? Oct 13 or Oct 20? I understand that the Thursdays work for you for your LSR, but the race is on a Sunday so you'll have to adapt for that. From Sunday 17th onwards, I would not top 8M anymore. Mid-week, a couple of easy 5-6 milers, and the Sunday before, a gentle 8M LSR.

Oh, and, there's only so many ways I can say "ditch the spinning" - especially the week before the big day

Doozerydoo - why don't you aim for a negative split. That's hard enough on any given day, but on this course, the second half is decidedly harder than the first. Maybe start with a pace group slower than your PB and push on from about 6-7M, aiming to finish ahead of them. Don't worry about recovering in time, you will.

You'll be fine. If weather permits, just loosen up the legs before the race tomorrow a little.

    @davedanon
I resent you insinuating that I am running under another name.
Even if i were, it has nothing to do with original question.
So if you must know all my details here it is.
    Friend got two lottery codes.
Gave me one and I registered in MY OWN NAME.
    Any ambiguity there for you?

It's looking pretty windy out. Have the pre-race fear big time. Gotta get me to that 4 mile mark where I start to feel comfortable and enjoy myself pronto.

Very best of luck everyone, hope we all have a good race. So scared. So windy.
