Why is the (effective N80) bypass an R road? And why does the N80 not actually intersect at a junction with the M7?

    +1

Could never understand why the N80 has no interchange with the M7...

I would guess the cost of having to get laoise saw mills to move would have been massive.

The N80 could have been slightly diverted.

The link road from J16 to the N80 would've cost a bit anyway.

There are a few roundabouts in Portlaoise that have exits for future upgrades included. I always wondered were these for a North Ring Road?

seems to actually be the idea !

heres the map of "Proposed Orbital Roads In The Portlaoise Area" :

There was a "Portlaoise Southern Distributor Road" included in the 2016-2021 Government Capital Investment Plan, but like all the other schemes in the plan, it's nowhere to be seen.

When will work begin on the Portlaoise Southern Circular road? The Western & Northern circular also need to be built. Traffic in Portlaoise is crazy. Makes sense to build the roads in phases though.

It's the Y Shaped road connecting the R426 and the N77 (incorrectly labelled the R423 on google maps)

I wish they'd build a proper bypass/ring like the Kilkenny ring road instead of fannying around with these things.
Extend the N80 out and around the town to the N80 Tullamore road- put a proper junction on the M7 to link with N77 and M7 traffic also. I'm sure my thinking is far too radical and expensive. It's what's needed though. Along by the Railway station has become a joke as the town has grown.

Portlaoise Southern Circular Road R426/Timahoe Road to N77/Abbeyleix Road Compulsory Purchase Order June 2017

I wish they would just get on with this road. How many more phases after cpo stage?

Agreed, it would be of great benefit. It looks fairly handy to build too, literally a straight line from O'Moore Park to Homebase through a single field.
