I have an old 1Kg fire extinguiseher(dry chemical powder) with a valid date until January 2011 in my house. I assume this is no use anymore and should be dumped?

Usually they replace them after 10 years in business, but I would never throw one out unless its obviously defective.

You can get them recharged, if you're in the Cork area I'll give you details.

Give it a shake, does the powder inside still move around or is it a solid lump?
There are a couple of different types some are factory charged and some have a separate Co2 Cylinder that can be easily replaced.
The main thing is if the powder is OK.
They aren't super expensive anyway, plus a 1kg is of limited use, far better to get a 9kg one if possible.

I can't feel the powder moving around at all so maybe it's best just to bin it and buy a new one:(

Sure, if you're going to bin it, you might as well try discharging it for the craic first!

At least you'll see what little powder there is in a 1kg extinguisher, imagine fighting a fire bigger than a burning cigarette with it.
It will persuaded you to go for a bigger one next time.

    ps. Powder can be messy.
