My friend has a 01 Civic that keeps popping out of 2nd gear. I'm presuming the syncros are gone and we're trying to find a used gearbox as I believe a rebuild will only cost more.

I've never had to source a replacement gearbox and am looking for some advice how to assess if a used one is any good or not, other than checking it shifts into each gear. Any advice please?

A used gearbox could go wallop next month, a reconditioned one is obviously better.

Any idea on pricing? Have you had one reconditioned that you could recommend the company that did it?

I've dealt with naas gearbox centre and found them good, I do know they get mixed reviews though.
Don't know about pricing, it varies. I'm guessing somewhere around €600 but could be wrong.
The gearbox on those hatchbacks was apparently a weak point.

Then there's the cost vs value of the car thing to consider.

That's why a used gearbox is being considered.

BTW, the car is a saloon model (seventh gen). Not the typical hatchback boy racer Civic ;)

You could chance one from a scrapyard. Maybe they'd take it back if it was bad, but you're still looking at all that labour.

My local mechanic said they would fit a used gearbox for €150.

I've sent in a part request on partfinder and have emailed several companies for recon/repair quotes too.
