Nice to hear Virgin Media/UPC get a kicking. I sensed many thousands of heads nodding in agreement with my own.

All I though was "get sky, you bum". But then I remembered they're Dubland based, so probably are in apartments with restrictions on satellite dishes...

Gabriele Marcotti is bloody tough to listen to. He basically shrugged off/ignored what Eoin/Ken were saying re. problems with ECL..

Marcotti was at his most condescending during yesterday's pod. It was irritating to listen to him purposely take exception to every point they made. He's a bit of a tit. Not quite at the Graham Hunter level, but came close to it yesterdy at times.

Agreed. And I say that as someone who always takes the devil's advocate/contrarian side in any friendly debate (and I've been called annoying and worse because of it). I think it was the audible sigh from Marcotti before he answers that really got to me.

I don't think it's as black and white as being interpreted. The SC lads are on the record on previous pods as saying they enjoy Marcotti challenging common convention. All these interviews are prepped in advance and so it's not beyond the bounds that they would have agreed pre recording that the SC lads would present the man on the street view and Marcotti would play the part of the killjoy spilling out the facts.

I didn't find anything he said objectionable. Don't forget he has covered the administrative beat for a long time and most people aren't interested in it.

It takes a lot for me to deliberately skip an episode of SC.

Well, just him, really. The know it all douche.

TBH if you were going down that route, you may as well just get decent Virgin broadband and watch it online for free... ;)

Yeah, but I don't think the final podcast was ever put up. At least it didn't appear on the App I use.

Perhaps, but some of the points he had to make were stupid and hard to listen to - and that's before you take into account his pantomime sighing before each and every answer.

Enormous thrashings were commonplace in the European Cup before last week, so you shouldn't bemoan the lopsided nature of so many of the weeks matches, according to Marcotti anyways. That may well be partly true, but they were are at a notable high this weekend and, in the past, The European Cup wasn't marketed and pushed at us as the barometer as the ultimate in football competition and quality, as it is now. To dismiss the clear signal this week sent out - of a competitive dearth and severe gap between the haves and have nots of European football, to the detriment to the competition as a whole - simply because, as a contrarian, you have too, betrays a lack of curiosity and effort on Marcotti's part. All of which makes me think he's more of a clown than someone actually worth listening to.

And that part about petitioning John Delaney for change; that was pure and utter cringeworthy spoofing. A waste of time. There's plenty of other worthy football journalists out there who aren't irritating, coasting on their name and whomanage to be illuminating as well.

I listen to what Marcotti has to say, because I think he usually has some fresh insight or knowledge to share. For example, he demolished the imbecilic Martin Samuel's auld scutter around the decision making on the impending CL changes. His tone is appalling, though, he's a complete helmet on a personal level, desperately snide and patronising. Compared to a gent like Jonathan Wilson, there's no competition as to who I'd rather be listening to.

But at least he's not the constantly erroneous, unctuous scutter-trumpet, Graham Hunter. It's hard to believe he's a real person, rather than some attempt at satire gone badly wrong.

He comes across as if he's fed up of lecturing idiots on football. He's absolutely awful to listen too. He thinks he's a football genius and there is no other ideas, he has all the answers and if you try and question him he comes across as patronising. I'm not sure why they bother with him. His knowledge of football is massively overstated and he's still suffering badly with the demise of Serie A.

The only reason I listen to him is to hear him become incredibly frustrated with Ken's questions. I'd say Ken loves winding him up.

We've an extra View from Fairview to look forward too.

Ken's smugness about it last week was hilarious even though he has no interest in the sport.

I will admit that in the middle of the match today, that popped into my head. Very much looking forward to it!

I think that is actually the bit that makes it even funnier, it parodies the pub stool characters who are experts on every sport going without actually ever worrying about trying to understand any of the finer details as long as their team is winnin' :D

Agreed that MArcotti was terrible at the start of that interview, cringy bad. But when he got into it he made some great points. Worth the listen, but he was like a child in a temper tantrum for the first few questions.

I remember Ken telling a story about Marcotti. Marcotti told him to do a secret knock on the door of his apartment when he was meeting up with him during the Euros....and then opened the door laughing at him and taking the mick. Sounded like a pretty funny moment.

Eoin tweeted out the other day saying he really enjoyed the chat (obviously he has to promote it, but he didn't have to do it in that way).

I'm sure they have plenty of time for Marcotti and view him as a valuable contributor.

I found his initial reaction strange though. I'm sure he was prepped and knew what to expect. It's completely fair enough for him to take an opposing view, but he just did it in a strange way. I'd say there was an element of theatrical license in the discussion.

I still think he came across as a w*nker.

Sadly for grammar vigilantes, the previously incorrect use of 'literally' as an emphasis has become officially 'correct' now due to common usage.

A bit like 'actually' in many circumstances, 'literally' can be safely left out without changing the meaning of a sentence, but it does give it a bit more oomph, especially in the spoken word. You don't have to like it, or use it, but it's here to stay.

I fully expect all kinds of other nonsense to follow. Soon you'll be able to spell your/you're, to/too/two/2, and they're/there/their/dere any the hell way you like and it will mean whatever you thought you were trying to say and not what you actually literally spelled out.

Time to retire to the drawing room with a decanter of hors d'age and a Webley.

Although Jimmy Nesbitt got a brief mention when discussing the balon d'or award split, I was really expecting a rerun of the jingle and random James Nesbitt facts with the return of the great man to prime time tv in cold feet......!
