Bit of an etiquette question. I have received some rhubarb and want to make rhubarb and custard cake. I won't eat a whole one so want to give some to a friend. I can't be bothered making 2 smaller cakes so would you consider it ok to receive, wrapped in clingfilm, a third of a cake?

Where are you, the kettle has been on for the last two hours :D:D

Is rhubarb in season now? I might make it.
That's the one I found. I'm intending to make it tonight. Loooooove rhubarb!

I've often given people a portion of a cake, it's perfectly acceptable.

Now I have to make that cake too - I'm hoping there's enough rhubarb left in the garden :)

Driving past The Morrison hotel this morning noticed they were serving Gentlemen's Tea, the manly version of Afternoon Tea.

I'm intrigued. It's all very macho sounding but how would you invite a mate to join you without sounding like a date? Would it be suitable for a business meeting?

    Whatcha think?

It sounds really good! Might go for it myself.

I saw similar advertised in Fota Island when I stayed there recently. It seems to be less scones and tea, and more steak and beer. I'd have trouble imagining it for a business meeting, but I suppose I can't see why it wouldn't work.

Sounds deadly, I was about to start researching gender fluidity until I saw the bit about it being open to women too! I'd murder a rasher scone :D

I first heard of the term on facebook, 2 women were having it. When I first head it I thought it was some euphemism for something!

    This is the morrisons one.

^ Blimey. That's a big tea! Is that for two?

    Gentleman's Tea for €25?
That's a 3 o'clock start in Mulligan's with 4 pints of Guinness & a whiskey, then home in time for a proper dinner.

I made it this morning - photo in the baking thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=101030767&postcount=104

It took a lot longer than they said to cook, but that might be because I didn't have enough rhubarb in the garden so I used some I had in the freezer, already cooked. It was mushier and probably had a lot more moisture in it although i strained it.

If anyone is interested, EasyFood magazine is looking for an intern in their test kitchen. More details here:

    oooooh, that looks good.

I have a feeling mine's going to turn out gank (yes, it's currently in the oven. Yes, I know its 23:30) because I discovered after everything was mixed that my tin is much, much, much too small. So I'm cooking it in a silicon cake mould that looks like this blue one in front. Sure, we'll see how it turns out. If the worst comes to the worst I'll chop it up and, idk, make rhubarb cake ice cream or something.

As I was making it I was cracking my eggs into a glass before adding them to the mix, as The Mammy taught me, and I was thinking about how I mentioned that I do this on this forum before and discovered that it was unusual because people have never gotten a bad egg in the shop. As I mused on whether or not to drop the habit and save washing a glass the fourth egg I cracked fizzed, I swear fizzed, out of the shell and the stench was horrific. I am very, very glad that I did not crack it straight into my cake mix, and I will continue to crack my eggs into a glass. I'd much rather wash a glass than bin a cake.

Hope it turned out well - it tastes great so you won't care how it looks.

I also crack my eggs into something individually before adding them, because I've had a rotten egg in the past too. Once bitten...

I was taught in Home Ec to crack them into a glass but I'm lazy so I just give shake every egg I use and if they rattle they're a goner. Much easier imo :D

We made churros after Bake Off tonight. They turned out really well, but while we were making them I suddenly felt really really hungry to the point of feeling sick. I couldn't stomach more than a bite of them so now I'm lying on the couch eyeing up the bowl of chocolate sauce while I wait for my husband to come back from the shop with a couple of apples for me. Apples. :( I want churros.

It does not look good: one side didn't bake properly and sort of collapsed and it broke trying to get it out. It tastes damn fine though, and no one can tell once it' smothered in more custard :)

Oh man, the cake shop beside eurospar in Kilmainham had rhubarb tart freebies on the counter the other day. Absolutely gorgeous. Haven't made much rhubarb this year, but have saved the r&c recipe and will get to it today.

Any spare thirds of rhubarb cake would find a welcome home here! ;-)

What luck, haven't posted in ages and come across a rhubarb recipe.

I'm in the middle of making the most unusual stew I've ever made.
Bear with me because it's a rather involved process - actually the base of the stew is a by-product of something else.

On thursday I picked 2.5Kg of elderberries to make pontack sauce - an old english savoury sauce made from elderberries, cider vinegar, shallots, allspice, black pepper, ginger, mace and cloves. You boil the shallots and spices in the berry juice and vinegar. I ended up with 1Kg of sliced, vinegary, fruity, spiced shallots so I decided to stew beef cheeks in it.

The only additions to the spices, shallots and browned cheeks were brown Belgian beer, a little maple syrup, bay leaves and salt. I'll cook it for 3 or 4 hours in the oven.

I'm hoping for a sour, fruity incredibly complex delicious stew tomorrow.

I'll take pics and pop them up in the HWIHFDLN thread.

Hoping to do mexican for Friday night, I see Tesco have a good range of mexican food now but I can't see any chipotle chillis.

Anyone know of somewhere in North Dublin I can get my hands on some?

They sell chipotle paste in the "speciality" section.

Some Asian stores stock some Mexican supplies. There's one on liffey st and I *think* I've seen them there.

I gave myself the stupidest injury today while peeling a turnip, honestly don't know if I could manage to do it again if I tried.
So I was peeling quite a large turnip from the garden beside the sink and it was wet as I'd just washed it. Anyway it went to slip out of my hand as I turned it (I flip them into the air like a ball for whatever reason) so I instinctively moved my hand under it the way it was falling and just put the tip of my middle finger across a lip of a cup as the turnip landed on it with a thump. So now my finger is stupidly painful since and I think I'm going to have a black nail :(

I was making butternut squash soup today. I stupidly decided I'd like a kick from it so as it was blending I added a little bit of cumin powder at the exact same time by toddler hit off me so lots of cumin went in. The soup was very very spicy. Too spicy for me. I then made regular vegetable soup and thought if I mixed both of them together the kick would dissappear.
Wishful thinking!! I now have a few litres of spicy vegetable soup that I don't like. Any tip for inspicing it please!?

Yoghurt might help? Or sour cream - both go well with the sweetness of butternut squash.

Alternatively. give up on it being soup and use some of it as the base for a curry maybe?
I've had tomato soup disasters in the past that turned into great pasta sauces :D

You could try adding a tin or two of coconut milk. Coconut goes brilliantly with squash. If I'm roasting it I sometimes sprinkle desiccated coconut & a bit of cumin on the chunks.

What sort of flavours do pomegranates go with? I'd rather savoury but not coucous or anything with too much cooking.

I'm making a beetroot, goats cheese and walnut salad tomorrow. Would it suit that?

Definitely. Goats cheese or feta would go well with pomegranate.
