Hitting unknown territory every week for the last 3 weeks, have only ever done 3 HM before this so only going past this distance now. 16 miles again tomorrow, done 16 last week too for my LSR. Done some speed work during the week and am a little sore in groin and also one of the arches in my foot. Not really feeling it but hopefully will have settled a bit before I head out at 7am.

Its funny you should mention Lucozade Sport, it has the opposite effect on me and the fizziness upsets my stomach. I can't stomach jelly babies etc on a run either, i find them sickly.

    Hi JS5,
I like Lucozade sport in general, but I agree with you that taking lots of it for an LSR can be a bit tough on the stomach. I switched over to High 5/ Nunn Electrolyte tablets in water for DCM 15 and found them to be very easy to drink before and during a race/LSR. I did take a Lucozade sport at the water station at the bottom of Roebuck road last year and the sugar kick was great to get me up the hill (plus Dubgal hurling abuse/encouragement at me too)!

If jelly babies aren't your thing (hmmmm jelly babies :P) then maybe try some 'Shotblocks' as they are probably a bit easier to chew and swallow when running.

To others considering 'going off the beer' in the lead up to the DCM.....I can hear the screams now.....maybe try the Erdinger alcohol free bottles (blue label) as an alternative, tastes like a regular beer when cold and is also isotonic, so it is basically a sports drink that tastes like beer :D

Hope to see a few of you at the DCHM in 2 weeks......best of luck with the runs this weekend!

I see Shotblocks mentioned a few times in feuling discussion . Can anyone tell me where to get them in dublin . I tried a few shops including elverys but they don't have them. .

Looks like a nice morning for the lsr here. Just waiting for the brekkie to settle before heading out. Good luck to everyone hitting the road this morning.

Runlogic in Temple Bar have them. I used them last year for marathon training.

The Cycle Superstore in Tallaght (Airton Road, off the Greenhills Road) normally have them too.;)

I tried using gels a few weeks ago but they upset my stomach! Keep up the good work! Mick!

I'm also using the Clif bar "Shot bloks" and would recommend them if like me you don't like gels.

I've got them from Amphibian King Ballymount and also from the Snow and Rock store beside Elverys in Dundrum shopping centre.

Around mile 8 my knees felt like they could do with some WD40.

First timer last year and this thread and Dubgal were a great help and I came in on target at 4.04 :)
I've upped my training from the start of the year and have covered over 30% more miles and feeling good & strong and hopefully will all come good on the day *quickly crosses fingers*
I've included some speed training and PMP runs this year as I had none last year on the HH1 plan as the plan for the debut was to run it all and finish
So this years plan is a mix of irishrunning.ie Intermediate and Advanced and so far all good
    But a quick question....
I had to amend the original plan a wee bit due to holidays and the last two weeks I've covered 15 & 17 miles on the LSR
but with the Dublin Half my next few weeks don't give me any step back week until taper. The weeks look like this
    wk11 18m (lsr tomorrow)
    wk12 20m
    wk13 D Half
    wk14 18m
    wk15 21m
    wk16 12m
    wk17 8m

The question is should I cut back and have a step back week before or after the Half?
I really wanted to get two 20 milers in this year but not sure if this might be too much with the Half in the middle?
Or should I run a 20mile lsr tomorrow and fall back a bit next week??

Thanks everyone for the words of support. I'm trying not to worry too much, but so many days off running has me panicked!

Safrongirl, I do have a foam roller, but I rarely use it. Because I hate it. Seriously I don't know how some of you are using it for 15 minutes at a go. It's torture! But I will talk to the physio about it, and see if he recommends any excercises. It would be worth it if it helped.

My knee is feeling a good bit better today, but I'll skip the LSR anyway. If I'm ok tomorrow I might try a short easy jog around the park.

This article was posted on last year's thread. http://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/health-family/parenting/a-trial-run-for-the-dublin-marathon-1.1914433 .... Nothing we haven't discussed here already, but an excellent summary.

I particularly like "Don’t dread your long runs. Make the most of them... Make these long runs fun. Get a bus somewhere and run home, arrange to meet others, bring a few euro in your pocket so you can stop for a drink..."

Good luck with the long runs this weekend, folks. Look after yourselves and share your experiences!

What am I doing posting this so late? They're all in bed already, surely! :D

Thanks NOP98, missed your post as was in bed (note good student :) ) also my first ever 20 miler done and dusted earlier, took forever time wise, however enjoyed it and, not feeling too bad either which is just as well as lots on this afternoon

20m LSR done. Sandyford to town including the last 4m of DCM from Roebuck. Then followed the coast, Sandymount, through Blackrock and up to Cornelscourt, Foxrock and up. I have to sort out a different route, the 7 mile uphill finish is hard work. I felt pretty strong the whole run though.
Loads of runners out. I saw so many race-series tops.
Strangely, I didn't have to stop at one crossing until I got to Blackrock. It was like the Truman Show, someone was switching the green man on as soon as I got to every light!

    Weekly update Sep 5-11

Monday- basically a rest day as I had no run commute or planned run(5km walk)
    Tuesday- 9km @easy + 4x1,600m (~6min per rep)
    Wednesday- 9km @easy +9km@PMP
    Thurs- 7km @easy + 3x 6 x 400m (~85/86sec per rep)
    Friday- 8km @easy + 50min tempo(11.85km @ ~4:15/km)
Saturday - 25.15km (2hrs planned run) .About 10km at PMP.
Moved my LSR to Saturday from the usual Sunday this week.
I have considered leaving it this way but the easy day on Friday makes for an easier Tempo/LSR session on Sat/Sun. This week the tempo felt good but I felt a little under powered for LSR. But it was a good run with no problems.

Just used one High5 gel.I had no isotonics left(which I prefer) so this was a regular one and taking it over a few minutes makes it manageable although a bit sticky!
Took a different route than usual to mix things up but it felt longer(the novelty effect) even though it was a step back 2hr run! Back to boring route next week, I think!
Sunday -Looking forward to a do nothing day!

I can't believe I ran 20 miles today:) Found it tougher than last week's 19 despite the better weather, legs got more tired & sore much earlier. Feeling zonked but ok now. Didn't take on any fuel during the run except for some water, is this ok to do? I've practiced a few times with jelly tots/beans & they go down fine so don't feel the need to keep practicing. And had a smoothie with plenty of protein as soon as I got home.

29k (18m) completed, 2 x 9m loops on country roads, didn't really enjoy the first loop, felt niggles everywhere. Took a gel at approx half way and between that and the fact that I was into the 2nd loop, I started to feel better. Lovely morning for it. Most of my 'niggles' are in my left leg and I really believe its the country roads, the way they slope away, I'm constantly running on a slightly uneven surface...I've now started running in the middle of the road when I can!!! Well done to everyone else getting these long runs done :)

18m lsr done. Felt so much better than last week. Paid very close attention to nutrition and hydration yesterday and pre run. I ran in the Phoenix park so had water and a lucozade sport stashed. Took a gel (sis Isogel) at 8m and 11m and lucozade at 14m. Sipped water throughout. Felt good though a little sickly after I finished for a few mins. Might have taken too much of lucozade earlier. Overall very happy though 18m is a bloody long way

Hey Kin9pin, Just laughing here at Truman Show as funnily enough I had a similar experience, as no one not even green man was stopping me....ran my usual 8m today then followed DCM from Fortfield Rd to Merrion Sq - nearly did a dance when I arrived there thinking how it will feel at the finishing line in em <50 days time ....-aaaaah then ran up the canal and home.

Clocked a lot of runners out there too.

To avoid your 7m uphill finish why don't you incorporate parts of DCM (from Terenure on) from Sandyford into your LSR, tbh I have done it twice and will continue to do so for rest of them as might as well Make friends with the roads I will need to be pals with in October :)

In Athlone today. Got 5 miles in before the race so 18 miles for the day. Finished under 1:37 so very happy with the time.

CFR, that was a serious run. Well done!

It was just 18, I have never been the scary side of 20 and a warm day in Athlone was not the place to try it!

Thanks Antwerp, I did that last week, ran the first 17 miles of DCM then onto a Luas stop. I think I'll do that from now, I could do without the hills at this stage!
