I've been told that the red letters on the TDi badge of Volkswagen cars are an indication of the bhp of the car. Is this a definitive indicator of the bhp?

No.. VW themselves changed what these meant over the years of each model and then you have the people who rebadged them themselves.

Only real way is to get the engine code.

    Apparently......

    TDI = 100BHP
    TD (red) I = 110BHP
    T (red) DI = 130BHP

The amount of red letters is inversely proportional to the size of the owners brain.

    130bhp laaaad

I guess its more likely the car was rebadged incorrectly than registerd incorrectly. Just to be clear, I'm talking about a car that's badge indicates it is lower bhp than it is registered as. Just trying to make sure I'm getting what I should be.

There are VW cars that are 'officially' badged with red letters but it seems to be more of a vanity thing these days. According to this an 81 kw upgrade to the 1st generation TDI engine got a single red I in 1996. The 110 kw 2nd generation TDI engines got a red I and a red D and the Golf IV with 110 kw had an all red TDI.
We're in the 3rd generation now with these engines and I'm sure the red letters still mean something, but the article only talks about 1st appearances of these letters.

Edit: And these engines were in all sorts of cars from VAG. Audis, Skodas, Seats, VWs, did I forget anything?

Well in the Golf mark VII petrol variants the 1.2 has TSI in silver while the 1.4 has the SI in red so it does indicate higher bhp.

    T (red) DI = 130BHP

I think that used to be the case in the early 2000s, but I don't think it is any more. Both myself and my brother had 130hp passats over the years, his was a 2003 with red DI, mine was the same model, but the year was 2005 after the small facelift, It was just red I. Both cars were 100% unmodified.

    I think it has changed over the years. I have a 2004 Audi A4, it's a 130bhp, with a red I.

That's a whole other thread not as fhast no, the wolfsburg had all black TDI badges too - goes to further prove my point - badges mean nothing.

I was thinking the same. The red I distinguished HP on the Mk IV Golf IIRC. But after that it was just shiny bits off eBay.

One day I had called to a friend's house while driving the Octavia. The friends teenage nephew spotted the badge and once he saw the red I, that was all he was interested in. We has the car two years and never spotted the red I. 2011 2.0L Octavia, 140PS.

Red letters don't mean much, they did very early on but nowadays they're no indication of HP of the car. My Passat has a TD (red)I badge but is 170bhp from the factory, the other 170 I seen when looking had no red I on the badge..

Whats your favourite humming noise? Would it be mmm-mmmmm or would it be mmmm-mm? The first one there, now thats the sound of a fridge humming and the second one, now thats the sound of a man humming. You never hear a woman humming. I knew a woman once, but she died soon afterwards. ;-)
