I'm currently parked by the entrance to the maternity hospital in the CUH, watching heavily pregnant women smoke. Fűcking scumbags.

They should be jailed in my opinion. What are AH thoughts on the matter?

Yeah I think it's pretty disgusting. If the child has any related conditions the mother should have to pay for treatment in full. They can afford their smokes so they can pay for health care too. It smacks of ignorance and selfishness.

What if the mothers had given up heroin and all they do now is smoke?

Have you never been near an Irish hospital in your life before :)

I've had the misfortune to be around plenty of them in the last 5 years or so and I've seen this phenomenon in every single one. That and people with oxygen tanks doing the same thing.

    Scummers gotta scum.

I was asked for a light outside Galway Hospital a few years ago by an elderly gentleman wearing a dressing gown. He was using one of those throat boxes to speak - the ones which look like a small electric shaver.
He had a visible hole in his throat from previous surgery, and every time he inhaled, he had to block the hole with his finger, but when he exhaled the smoke partly came out of the hole in his throat.

If you feel strongly, would you not approach them and advise them on the possible effects of smoking on the foetus?

I saw a pregnant woman eating a Big Mac once.

Maybe we should just chain them up for the duration of their pregnancies?

OP should come up to Dublin to see them drinking cans outside the Rotunda. Cork coming second as usual.

It's always a certain type of woman you see skulling drinks or smoking when they're pregnant. They're usually the same people who dress their kids in tracksuits and feed them tesco value chicken nuggets and bags of crisps

What good would chaining up Big Macs do?

What is this throw the mothers of questionable parentabilty under a bus week? Just as well the buses are on strike. Not a moment sooner!

I totally agree with you OP. The baby is protected from all sorts of germs and toxins while in the womb but nicotine is not one of them. It means the baby is highly likely to be born addicted to smokes.

Of course it's the woman's body and she is entitled to do what she likes. But I think it's horribly ignorant and selfish.

No, smoking while pregnant is what's being referred to - not their income/socio-economic bracket.
    The criticism is deserved too.

And it isn't just her body. I don't know if she's entitled to do what she likes but she can't be stopped.

Leaving aside the direct health issue, you just know what parenting the kid is going to get in the long term if the mother (and the father obviously condones it too) has that much cop on

How will jailing them help their children?

The saddest thing that I'd ever seen were smokers outside the hospital doors.

    Watership Down is sadder.

    Poor bunnies.

The women in the ward used to leave their newborn baby in the little cot and shout over to me (having just gotten an epidural and unable to even get up for my own baby at one stage) asking me to watch their baby while they go out for a smoke. They'd be gone before you could even say anything, they'd wander out in their dressing gown and take forever. It's not like anything was going to happen the baby on the ward, there was a nurse always around, but the first days of the baby's life and they couldn't even forego a few cigarettes to stay with the baby until a family member arrived.
