I caved and contacted the company. I've to write a letter instructing them to take out of my account and put back in theirs.

Pain in the arse, considering I didn't do anything wrong. Tempted to charge an admin fee but for the sake of keeping relations good i'll write the time off... this time.

In fairness, if you have dealt with the company before they would easily be able to track you down and chase you for it, as they likely just hit the wrong payee on their system.

It would be different if it was just some random company or person. They would only be able to figure out your bank's branch from the details they had, and your bank wouldn't be able to share your details with them due to data protection, so you would be more likely to get away with it (if you left the morals at the door of course)

We had a customer a few years ago.
We kept invoicing them in Euro.
They kept paying us in Sterling.
We parked the difference in a rainy-day account in case they ever asked for it back.
    They never did.

    20 grand...
I know you need to give it back. But the fun imagining how you could spend it and if they really would come looking for it.
I remember years ago BT were overcharging me .. total sum was about E360. So they said they'd refund me and lodge it to my account.. This was about a week before Christmas so 2 weeks after Christmas I ring them up and say 'buddy, where's my money ?' They apologise and send me a cheque.. I cash said cheque.. About a month later I get E360 into my account.. and again a month after and a month after again.. so just over E1k . It was around the time they were leaving Ireland. So I stick the extra money in my saving account and wait for someone to call..
    Still waiting...
In fairness I had to do a lot of bollicking and tracking to figure out how they were overcharging me. Turns out they were charging me for a second phone line.. and calls made on that imaginary phone line.. bistards
