Using a MTB on the road

I have a Trex Merlin 6 MTB which serves its use perfectly for me ... messing around in the fields and cross country and short road cycles. But as the kids are getting older i'll be going on longer road cycles with them and with the 29" wheels, suspension and MTB tyres it gets uncomfortable.

Rather than having to buy a new bike is there a quick and easy way of putting road wheels on the bike?

Rim width will dictate the narrowest tyres you can get onto it - I'm running wtb i19 (mtb 29er) rims on my road/gravel bike, narrowest I can go is 28c, which is bang on trend for leisure road stuff.

I can't find any rim width data for your bontrager AT-550 wheels - but I would guess they are either 19 or 21 as they are supplied with 2.2/2.0 tyres.

So go buy some road tyres that are 700/35c and some inner tubes to match.

Job done.

I put the below tyres on my 27.5" cube, and they work lovely. They do them in 29" as well.

To answer your question though you can pick up tyres that offer enough grip on road or trails.
