    Garth Crooks co-presenting!

    :O :O :O :D

"James Morrison is a player that Roy Hodgson should be taking a keen interest in."

He said this shortly after Hodgson had become England manager... and when Morrison had already won 23 caps for Scotland.

Then there's his admiration of Brazil's supposed 4-2-1-3-1 formation at the London Olympics...

Foster and Allen giving it socks there last night.

The kids in the audience seemed to be quite enjoying it, normally when non-pop acts are on stage they couldn't look less interested.

Teams often find it difficult to take advantage of having the extra player.

I don't think we ever got the blow by blow account of this yet?

By the way, thanks to all who contributed to the music bio / concert film / tourfilm discussion during the Olympic tundra.. recently got meself Kodi'd up, so getting a great list of stuff to watch from all the suggestions..

    Yeah, sorry bout that.

Went a little something like this.

Got to stadium. Got a bit emotional at Get In The Ring being blasted out over the PA at the merchandise stand. Told myself I'd get a tshirt in a while. Never did, will regret forevermore.

Went inside. Asked for beer. Wasn't allowed have one cos I left my passport in the hotel, like any responsible grey haired adult would.

Caught the end of Alice In Chains. Sounded cool.

Waited a while. GNR came on. F*ckin rocked. All the Appetite stuff was balls out exceptional. The UYI stuff was amazing. The Chinese Democracy stuff was great news for the beer venodors inside the stands. Axl said flip all to the crowd.

In honesty, i've waited for my entire life to see them, and it was easily, easily worth the hassle and cost.

    So, learnings:

    1. Never go to a gig in the States without ID
    2. Make sure you have access to funds for the hopefully immently announced European tours. It would be absolute folly to miss these lads.
    3. If they play a stadium here, do whatever you have to to get on the pitch near the front. We were a little far back to feel the full impact. Such is the nature of stadium gigs.
    4. Slash is the greatest. The actual greatest. Really. Ever.

Good to see you had a good time, Donie :)

What ungodly hour did Axl arrive on stage? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,779 ✭✭✭✭Ol' Donie

It was inside the half hour, i think.

I will confess I was hoping for a strop. I mean, I've heard the songs a million times, do something mental!

Is he ambulant at this time, or still being wheeled in davros-like on Dave Grohl's old throne?

Oh he could perambulate with the best of them.

Left side of the ridiculously huge stage. Right side. Steps in the middle. Back to the dressing room, again, for a different bad shirt.

Sure there was no stopping him.

I don't think he would have been so precious.

Sure we can all speculate on what a guy who died at 40 might say in his 70s about the music he recorded in his 20s.. at least he didn't inflict Wings on us.

.. at least he didn't inflict Wings on us.

[Partridge] - the band the Beatles could have been [ \ Partridge]

.. maybe Skid was right above - what would Lennon have done had he reached the part of the 80s that destroyed many (most) musicians

I hesitate to ask, but... erm...I hope he was suitably attired downstairs, and has dispensed with the Spandex?

It's possible that this video was show in this programme, but I think it's quite funny that Spitting Image were talking about the same topic with the same rockstars back in about 1989. 27 years ago!

Didn't know Will Ferrell played drums for the Chili Peppers

It appeared to be mostly denim based, but I can assure you he was still very, very badly dressed.

    The way he should be.

Roy Wood - hugely underrated singer-songwriter, especially with The Move.

Shame he's known mostly for that Christmas song :(

The best band to be named after a Cliff Richard pen (possibly).

I wish bbc4 would do a special on the groundhogs, what a band they were.

I watched Ep 1 of 'Pop goes Northern Ireland' there (1969), it's a clone of 'Reeling In The Years', which is itself a clone of the BBC's 'The Rock and Roll Years'

But it was quite well done, BBC NI have some good archive footage and it was well put together. Without getting too political, there were some fascinating clips from the Gathering Storm of the Troubles. The soundtrack is not particularly Irish, it's universal.

Apparently the series is 3 years old and its all on Youtube. Worth a look if you have any interest in that sort of thing.

Also, its about time the BBC revived the Rock and Roll Years. They did every year from 1956 to 1989, so lets have another decade soon! Or even a few repeats.

    'Shipbuilding'

    Amazing song.

Absolutely. Never liked the Robert Wyatt version though. Find his voice too whiny. Elvis's version is sublime though, and the solo by Chet Baker is a thing of rare beauty.

Suede did a great version too, for the Help War Child album.
