Paying too much USC

    Hey guys,

My question is in regards to my pay as I am earning 29000 a year gross pay but I am paying USC of 96.15 every fortnight for the last year and a half. It did not dawn to me until a co worker mentioned that that is way to high as she is only paying 35 a fortnight,
After checking my PAYE online account I notice that on the allocation of rate bands USC part in my tax certificate there is my main employer listed and a second employer that I had worked for when I was a student but stopped over 3 years ago which is still listed there,
Would the reason for my high USC charge from revenue be that my usc credits are split between the 2 jobs? Do I just ring up and ask them to allocate all my usc credits to my main job and also would it be also possible to claim a refund on the extra USC I paid?
    Thanks :)

Simply - Yes. This is exactly why you are paying so much.

That former employer must not have given Revenue a P45 to let them know you had finished, which is why it is still appearing on your record.

If you have a P45 from them yourself, you should send that in to get your records corrected. However, your best first step here is to ring Revenue anyhow, and ask them to transfer through the rate bands for USC to your current job

Yes, just give your local Revenue office a call (enter your PPS number here to find the correct phone number).

They will then issue your employer with an updated tax credit cert for 2016 and in your next paycheque you will be refunded for all the USC you overpaid. In order to claim back the amount you overpaid in previous years, you will need to request a P21 balancing statement for those years (this can be done on your phonecall) and Revenue will issue you with a cheque, or you can provide them with your bank details via PAYE Anytime.

Use the ROS online service to request balancing statements for the previous years since you worked for the last employer.

Aye gonna use that p21 statement thanks, When I rang them up they said I need to send in my p60 to them in order to refund me for the last 2 years. Am I able to send that to them via online using the my paye account? After I send in the p60 if I just apply for the balancing statement will they know that I have overpaid my usc and automatically refund?
    Thanks.

It's much easier to do this online. You just need to enter the figures from your P60s rather than posting anything in. If you are due a refund they'll see that from your p60 figures and will issue it to you.
