How to export a car part for refurbishment and not incur import duty and tax when the

Does anyone have any experience in coordinating this with the shipment company or know where I could find more information.

I was hoping it would be as simple as handing over the car part at say the DHL depo and have someone record that I was shipping it out for refurbishment and then once it was returned it would be on record that the part was originally sent by me and that it is not new.

Any help is much appreciated.

It should be as simple as instructing the carrier to export this part and declare it at time of export to customs that it is being shipped for repair / refurbishment.

That might be a challenge with DHL though ......

This is what I would recommend ;

1. Record the part number and take a picture
2. Issue a written instruction to the carrier to state ;

Part nr : ...............
Is being sent to ; ................. (name and full address of the company in
the USA that will do the refurbishment) for repair / refurbishment.

This part will be returned to Ireland after completion of the refurbishment.

Original Value : € ...........

Signed
etc

3. Make a booking with DHL and request a DHL tracking number
4. Request an e-mail for their customs department
5. Issue an e-mail to the customs department and attach a copy of the letter
6. Request a copy of the export customs entry

On re-importation, be aware that, unless the refurbishment / repair is done under warranty, you are liable for duty and VAT on the cost of the refurbishment plus the transport costs out and back.
