Selasi is calm & not repeating his sponge I think, my money's on him for this week anyway.

Thought he deserved it. Can't even remember what Jane made!

Definitely. You'd have to wonder how he got chosen for the show!

It was probably just nerves that made him mess up. He still deserved to go.

Liked the first episode anyway. I thought they'd focus more on the actual mirror glaze than the sponge.

So far I really like Selasi, Benjamina, Candice and Jane. The older lady will really annoy me but I don't expect she'll be around much longer. Oops, I mean on the show!
3 great challenges to start, and the right person went. Delighted Bake Off is finally back!

Delighted to see it back tonight. Benjamina is my favourite so far and agree that it was a very fair elimination tonight. That person definitely deserved to go.

they had to do a mirror glaze as part of the showstopper last night.

event he best mirror glazes had bubbles or lines or flaws, i was angry because paul and mary were waxing lyrical about how great they were when i could see very clearly on my tv the bubbles

Nah, there were one or two that were pretty darn flawless.

I loved Selasi! Definitely thought he deserved to win star baker. He's just so cool. I hope he wins the whole show and when they give him his trophy he just rides off the set on his motorbike, cool as fcuk

Only catching up now, a great start to the season. Loved some of the mirror glazes, though surprised by the star baker choice. Not surprised Lee left, unsure how he got there.

I'm looking forward to seeing Lee on the An Extra Slice programme tomorrow - he must have more to him than we saw last night! I know if I was on a show like that I would be incredibly nervous and when I'm nervous I'm incapable of doing anything right so I'm guessing that might be where he was coming from too!

Can't say I agree. Most were lumpy.

Yeah I'd day the pressure got to him. I know I can bake well but I get stressed enough when the kitchen is messy. Stick me in a pressurised situation like that and I'd be in the corner crying into my burnt cake. He did a hell of a lot better than most people could do. It's not the type of show you should enter unless you're an exceptional baker who deals well with stress. Of course then we wouldn't get as many disasters and it wouldn't be as much fun. :pac:

I'll have a look back at the recording later. But I watched the show with my own eyeballs and recall a few of them being practically flawless.

I'll wait to see pictures of the one you thought were flawless.

I really like Selasi and Benjamina. I think Candice will get on my nerves and also Val.

The technical challenge was a funny one, most people would eat Jaffa cakes but I've never really heard of anyone making their own ones! Maybe they'll have to make their own custard creams next week :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58,456 ✭✭✭✭ibarelycare

It certainly put an end to the age-old question of whether a jaffa cake is a cake or a biscuit :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,201 ✭✭✭dee_mc

I'll be trying my hand at a low sugar, low fat jaffa cake during the week, at the request of my mam who found a recipe and is curious as to just how bad they will be! I'll let ye know how it goes!

Right, I've rewatched. First thing to mention is that the only stipulation for the mirror glaze is that it should cover the entire cake. There was no mention that the sides had to be completely smooth. The only one they specifically praised for not being lumpy on the sides was Jane's. The other one's who were praised for the appearance focussed on the mirror glaze: Rav, Val, Benjamina, Candace (tops, not sides) and George. These were all flawless, glaze-wise. They were praised for this and lumpiness wasn't mentioned. I didn't actually notice if all of these were lumpy though Benjamina's looked smooth on the sides to me, as did George's and all of the above bar Candice's looked gorgeous. If they weren't mentioning lumpiness, then I guess either they weren't lumpy or they didn't consider it a more important factor than getting the mirror glaze right. They're the judges! Some of the cakes were terribly lumpy but I don't know how you can say they all were. On rewatch, at least three that I saw weren't, Jane's, George's and Benjamina's.
