Renault Trafic cutting out after driving through puddle

Was driving along the South Ring in Cork earlier and was caught by surprise by a large puddle at the end of the Bandon Road flyover. I hit the puddle quite hard at about 90km/h and soon after the check engine light started flashing and the van cut out, I managed to pull in somewhere safe.

I tried to start the engine after and while it turn over it would cut out soon after. I got a tow to my gaff and left the van alone to dry for about 5 hours. Tried to start again and it ran, but I only got about 200m down the road before it cut out again. No engine light though. I'm still hoping its just wet spark plugs, but I'm starting to think it's worse

Any thoughts? really hoping it's not hydrolocked :(

Considering diesel engines don't have spark plugs its unlikely that they are wet ;) best bet is to get a good mechanic to look at it, it could be one of a few things!

Could be water in the air intake which is never good if it gets to the cylinders. Maybe take out the air filter to see if it wet or signs it got wet?

Could be the altenator is after getting wet or some sensor is water damaged. Get it read by a code reader and go from there.

I had an xtrail which would show up the battery light when i went through a deep pool of water.....bit stupid where the altenator was placed on a 4x4 jeep.....cant remember how low the altenator on the van is but would be worth a check.

thanks lads. Was still cutting out the next day, so got a mechanic on the case. Fingers crossed it isnt anything cylinder related!

Well according to the mechanic, the fuse box got soaked (which is a bit of a worry since that is by the passenger door!) and also the wire for the fuel pump, but the engine is fine, thank the lord!

Also check the alternator belt, its low down and a splash through a puddle can lubricate it enough to slip off....

The fuse box on these are notorious for allowing water in, thus over time all the connectors get a little fuzzy.....

    from experience....
