99 years in a century?

I see so many polls and lists of the best so-and-so of the 21st century that include the year 2000 which was the last year of the 20th century.

There is no year 0 in the AD/CE calendar, therefore both the new millennium and the 21st century kicked off in 2001, it drives me scatty.

You're right and it was highlighted at the time, but the pressure to celebrate the new millennium when the numbers turned over was irresistible.

The first year of the century was 2000, the last will be 2099. That's 100 years.

How about if we assume that the first century AD/CE only had 99 years? (The fuss of creating this time system caused Year Zero to dissolve into itself.) That way, the year 100 is the first year of the 2nd century, and your underwear becomes untwisted.
