Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    In all honesty there's no harm in emailing your OP's planner when you get to station and asking for certain courses. Doesn't mean you'll get them but it's worked for me on a few occasions

    They're the guys and girls who detail your shifts, overtime, holidays and training etc

    You get federation discounts / benefits but you have to pay into it monthly, however the benefits are good. Look on the website for offers and rates.

    Also you get newforge discounts at the country club, they also have cars and holidays etc there.

    I work in car sales at the minute and considering purchasing car via CH for my long driving.

    Do they do special deals on vehicles for Officers? and what company do they use?

    I heard that Vauxhall do offers for Police officers, potentially 5% I think.

    You can purchase through newforge cars, they do some pretty good deals.

    Also there are a few websites linked in the police federation benefits section.

    So which are the best (or worst) districts to work in? I'm assuming everyone will have their own opinion of 'best' and 'worst'. Personal opinions on these would be good; also In terms of overtime, duties, crime etc

    Belfast has the most overtime but alot of it is not optional, Strabane and Derry would have alot of OT becuase of the areas etc ! but obviously there is alot more terrorism duties than normal policing duties in these areas and they are in the arse end of no where which isn't good.

    Where I live, my 1st preference would be working in Derry. I do have some areas that are closer to me. But for safety reasons would not go there. Also me and the wife are considering moving from where we currently live. Due to security issues.

    It's like an army ration pack, tastes alright. Afaik they're given on special events like 12th, tenants vital, g8, holding scenes etc.

    But they aren't given regularly nor every day.

    A wee jam piece and a carton of Ribena lol

    I do a bit of volunteering and at large events like the above we got a pack lunch. Pretty good actually; fresh sandwich, bit of chocolate, crisps, fruit and a drink.

    I did some work a few years ago where we got the 12 hour brown boxes.. Must have been about £25 worth of food in them lol

    You get lunch when on certain operations/events otherwise you organise your own lunch

    PSNI don't advertise what working times will be do they? and if a mop phones in they are hardly told which time you will be back in, are they?     I remember at some event got talking to a copper and asked him about his shifts and he even told me the days and nights he was working. OK, I told him I had friends in the PSNI and I was helping out at the event so had a hi viz vest on with a company logo on it, so that probably made it easier for him to talk to me. I didnt tell him I was interested in joining. Sure you have those 'Day in the life' quotes on the joinpsni page giving you times of shift patterns too.

    So in terms of pay. After graduation base salary springs up to circa 22,500 plus NITA of 3000 gives a nice starting package of around 25,500.

    How much potentially would one make through overtime in a policing area not Belfast or Londonderry?

    How does having a mixture protestant/catholic officers work in practice?
    Do protestant officers get assigned to protestant areas and catholic officers to catholic areas?
    I would tend to think that asking opposite officers to police oppositely religioned communities would be a recipie for disaster. Are there problems this way?

    Are the officers from there cliquey and prefer to work and associate only with other officers from their own side of the community?

    You are there to protect and serve the public from crime irrespective of religion. Policing communities by assigning officers on what religion they are to avoid a 'recipe for disaster' is wrong on so many levels.

    Are you being serious?
    I'm guessing you have no interest in a policing career and just wish to stir the pot.

    They are just different religions not different species. How do you think the rest of the planet work with each other?

    Think you need to get out more maybe read a book or two.

    Overtime in general is pretty high. I'm in the city so it is different but each district has its own events and problem areas etc which needs constant monitoring. Frankly there aren't enough officers in response without the use of overtime to manage these events, so you'll get plenty of it wherever you go. Unfortunately it isn't exactly optional so, as I tell myself and my incredibly understanding partner, think of the money!

    You have to do 3 years service before you can look to move to specialist units/departments. Sgts exam comes up quite often too for those that would be interested, but you really have to know your stuff

    Would I be right in saying there are more Sgts than there are Sgt positions?

    Transfers and promotions work on a merit list like regular recruitment. There will always be a cut off point unfortunately
