A friend of mine has asked if I wanted to go to the 'Taste of Cavan' with them tomorrow. Now they are insisting that it's €5 on the door and nothing else but I'm suspicious that it's going to be something similar to the Taste of Dublin and I'll have to buy florins or whatever they use in order to get anything at all. Anyone any experience of it? I'll prob go regardless but would like to know what to expect!

No it's not at all like Taste of Dublin.

Taste of Cavan is great. It's not the same standard of food as the Dublin version but it's a great day out if you're up there.

Actually yes, was just looking at the website and it looks really good, more like a giant market of sorts :)

Best of luck to the O'Donovan brothers this afternoon. I love that they are putting their success down to their Nan's cooking, & shteak & shpuds.

Sooo....apples, apples on trees. When do you pick those bad boys? There's an old orchard where I work and, not that I would go scrumping from my employers, theoretically apples could become pies. Also, do I need to, like, climb up said tree? I remember trying to surreptitiously shake one towards the very end of apple o'clock last year and the tree basically laughed at me.

I have also found a blackberry factory on my way home, about 2km of bushes (between Broombridge & Phibsborough along the canal, Dublin boardsies), happy times ahoy!

Wine opened last weekend managed to sneak into midweek without being drank.

    Far from posh :D

Can anyone recommend a good recipe for chocolate avocado brownies?

Can anyone recommend a good recipe for chocolate avocado brownies?

These are the ones I make.
    1 ripe avocado
120ml (1/2 cup) agave nectar (or honey)
170g Jar of nut butter (hazelnut butter is MUCH nicer but hella expensive)
55g (1/2 cup) Cocoa powder (get cacao powder if you wanna be super healthy)
    1 tbsp Coconut flour
    1 tsp baking powder
    3 eggs
    50g Chocolate
    Mixed Nuts

    Preheat the oven to 180C

    1. Sift the cocoa powder, baking powder and coconut flour.
    2. Mash the avocado.
    3. Add the avocado, honey, nut butter and eggs to the flour mixture.
    4. Add in the chocolate chips.
    5. Pour into a grease 9x9 baking tin.
    6. Scatter the nuts on top.
    7. Bake for 15-20mins until a skewer inserted comes out cleanish.

Allow to cool and cut into squares.

Thanks a million for this. I don't have agave nectar, coconut flour, nut butter, cacao or cocoa powder and having priced them up, I don't think I will be getting them as I'm looking at €15 ish for them alone.

Would prefer a recipe that uses ingredients I'd already have or that aren't as expensive. I can get cocoa powder no problem as that's inexpensive.

Has the price of chicken fillets gone up, or am I imagining it?

I haven't noticed it for regular ones in supermarkets, unless you mean free range or something. If anything they have come down a small bit in the last few years. Just check the price per kilo.

I have noticed the fillets tend to be bigger in prepackaged packs, so they might appear dearer per fillet, but its still around the same price per kilo.

You only get 3 fillets in aldi which are 500g.
    https://www.aldi.ie/en/product-range/meat/poultry/products-detail-page/ps/p/irish-chicken-breast-fillets/

In butchers doing "10 for 10 euro" they are usually about 130g.

I often find these 10 for 10 etc. are not necessarily Irish chicken fillets, and that butchers will often sell Irish ones for a higher price. Nothing wrong with non-Irish chicken fillets etc. but I think a lot of people might assume that if they see chicken fillets in their local butcher they are Irish - I have noticed it creeping in more and more - I first started noticing it when I saw pricing/displays for "chicken fillets" and then pricing/displays for "Irish chicken fillets" alongside them.

I buy free range myself and find the Tesco price pretty decent at €3.80 for 250g. Wish free range was cheaper but I guess it's unavoidable!

I have to sell my beloved Kitchen Aid stand mixer, because it won't be compatible with European voltage. It's a niche item, and they're expensive, and there's a good few on Craigslist so I've just made a deal that's far below what it's worth. I'm selling it for a song, which is sickening! I'm assured it's going to a loving home, at least. I'm not sure if I'm more annoyed about having to sell it, or if I'm annoyed I never nab such good deals myself :D

It's a karma-thing Faith, sometimes you have to do good things to others before they return the favour! ;)

Does this mean you're coming home? Couldn't you just get an adaptor for the plug?

That's a bummer Faith! Hopefully as Gloomtastic said you'll get a bargain yourself over this side of the pond.

Faith, maybe too late but you can get a transformer to change the voltage to run 110v appliances here.
    Possibly too expensive, though.

Wishing you some serious Kitchenaid Karma in your new home. May someone who went walking in Brown Thomas (or local equiv) after a boozy lunch and impulse purchased one have to place it for sale to avoid the ire of their spouse

It would also be pretty big and industrial looking for something of that power.

    I see this

    http://www.davidlebovitz.com/will-a-kitchenaid-from-america-w/
Q: Will the US-model KitchenAid mixer work in Europe?

A: Yes, they will work. But we do not recommend it. US units are 110V, Europe runs on 220V. This will slow down the unit causing it to overheat.

Q: Is it possible to use a converter or transformer?

A: That is possible as well, and again, we don’t recommend it.

Q: If I take my mixer out of the country, is the warranty still valid?

A: If you take the unit out of the United States, it does void the warranty.

Q: Are there any other hazards to using a US-model KitchenAid abroad?

A: Hazards include: overheating, possible property damage, and personal injury.

The bottom line is we don’t recommend use of the units outside the US…due to the hazards that could arise.
at first I thought it was a typo saying it would slow down, but it could be due to the frequency difference. I would want to check out people who have actually done it, I wouldn't have expect it to last any length of time, very surprised the manufacturer (allegedly) say it would work. You could possibly get internal electrical parts to change as spare parts, as manufacturers usually try to commonize as much as possible.

This lad seems to have done it. Probably a fairly big job though. http://www.fixya.com/support/t1072830-kitchen_aid_110v_450watt_want_convert

Fingers crossed on the karma front!

I'm relocating to England next month for a PhD :).

I checked it out, and found the same things that rubadub posted ^. Seems like it's not particularly viable for an item like a KitchenAid. We have a PS4 that'll work no problem, so it seems to depend on the item.

In the frustrations of online selling, I got an email this morning saying "Will you take [miniscule amount] for it? There's some going for that amount but they're all in [far away city] and I don't want to travel". Yeah, bud, I'd say the reason they're priced so low is BECAUSE they're in a place no-one wants to travel to .

Also, to be fair, it's aesthetically delightful but functionally crap. It's only 325 watts, and rocks like there's an earthquake when you turn it past 2. I'm planning to move up in the world of stand mixers!

Hey, anyone here about how avocados are the new cocaine to Mexico? Apparently there's such high demand for them these days that the cartels are controlling the avocado supply and it's causing lots of trouble.

I hadn't heard about the Mexico part but had heard about raids on avocado farms in New Zealand. I'm a bit avocado dependent. I, selfishly and pathetically, hope we don't suffer a mad drop in avocado supply :D

Just on the topic of avocados - I really like them but it's so annoying the way you wait for them to ripen and then you forget about them and come back and they are nearly too ripe - then there's a very short window for you to use them! I'd be the only person in my house who would eat them so I'd only ever eat a half at a time but it's so hard to keep the other half fresh :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,951 ✭✭✭SB_Part2

I tend to buy the ready to eat ones in Tesco. I know they are more expensive but I hate waiting.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,057 ✭✭✭MissFlitworth

They are a fickle mistress alright, leahyl. I've gone the sb_part2 route and I don't normally buy the ones that need to ripen anymore, too many went to the bin after transitioning from rock to slush on me in the blink of an eye.

(I am most pigulous and normally either eat the whole avocado in one go or half for dinner and half on toast for breakfast the next morning)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,176 ✭✭✭angeldelight

I don't know if I've just been lucky but I find the Tesco Value ones in my local store to be the best in terms of being ready to eat within a day or so and they're only 49c each

You've got such good memories :D. I managed to make peace with the flour, and successfully baked a number of things, but the potatoes are just so shît that I've given up on eating them altogether. Watery, waxy, lumpy horrible-ness.

Is it still new potato season at home? There's this one van by the side of the road that I dream about - the spuds are the stuff of legends. I'll be making a trip there when I'm home if they're still around!

I managed to have avocado in all 3 of my meals yesterday :o. This is the article I read: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/aug/12/hispters-handle-unpalatable-truth-avocado-toast

I got one for my blender, coffee machine and toaster oven (brought home from the US). It's a big industrial step down converter that is about €100, weighs a ton and isn't worth it. I'd be very wary of a mixer with it. The noise out of my blender's guts is unholy when it's going.
