Have you ever been inspired to do something you saw others do?

I was just in Dun Laoghaire watching the swim stage of Ironman 70.3 and I know that either next year, or 2018 I will do one. I watched it last year and decided then and went off and got swimming lessons as a result!

I always thought marathon runners were absolutely off their heads, but once I went to cheer on my friend in Dublin a couple of years back I knew I had to get that buzz and I completed the same race the following year.

Have you ever done something you didn't think you'd do, just because you were inspired by others?

Doesn't have to be sport either - I'm just still buzzing after watching the swimmers. Off now to watch them run to the finish!

I cannot fathom how fit a person has to be physically and mentally to do an ironman challenge. I commend them all. Fair play.

I can kind of grasp it for the 70.3. The full ironman is all sorts of insane though. Such utter dedication required to even consider entering it.

The trouble with me is that I am always getting inspired to do challenging things. The Marathon is a good example. But I completely and utterly lack the conviction to see it thru.

Aim for a half marathon first and use the sense of achievement/accolisment to push you on then??

**assuMing you can find time to train

In fairness Tom, a walk around the park normally knocks any aspirations of fitness out of me!

I can kind of grasp it for the 70.3 too.

I did my first triathlon this year. Zero swim training and very little run training. But I did it and I loved it. The natural progression would be the Olympic distance, which I'll train for over the winter.

Then if that goes well, double Olympic would be a challenge, but that's the same as a 70.3, so I'd be more inclined to do that one.

But four years ago none of this would have been possible. I was grossly overweight and couldn't run for the bus. But seeing others around me lose weight showed me that I could, and here I am. Mid August having smashed all of my fitness targets for the year!
